About Carmina

Hi! I’m Carmina, the artist behind Color is the Cure. I have been drawing and painting my whole life, and I love learning new styles and mediums, and helping students find joy through creative discovery!

I majored in art at college and then returned to my alma mater to do a Master of Arts in Teaching. I taught public school for 3 years, and now I’m excited to be able to teach smaller groups and really connect with individual students and budding artists, while keeping a schedule that is flexible enough for me to also work on building a business around my own artwork.

Like most artists, I go through phases with my work, and although I have enjoyed making realistic pastel drawings featuring the human form, I currently work mainly with acrylics and watercolors on paper, making stylized depictions of animals, plants, and mythical creatures. I also enjoy crochet and Mexican style “papel picado” or cut-paper crafts, and I have started adding hand lettering and calligraphy to my repertoire.

My teaching style is customized to what my students need. I am flexible, a great listener, and my focus is always on improving skills in a relaxed, judgement-free environment. My goal is for my students to create something that makes them feel great!

I actually resisted teaching for a long time because I really wanted to just focus on my own work, but I had a lightbulb moment when a new friend told me that I'm really good at explaining things in a way that she could really understand, and I thought, "maybe I should look into teaching..." and now being an advocate for arts education is something that's really important to me.

About the lesson

I taught high school for 3 years, and I also have experience with middle school students. I would love to expand into teaching adults as well!

Find someone who you feel comfortable with, you need to be able to ask lots of questions! A teacher's personal style doesn't necessarily limit what they're able to teach you. It's more important for your personalities to click.

This past fall I attended the Atlanta Pride Festival for the first time, and it was so much fun! I am also a regular attendee of the Georgia Rennaissance Festival. I love to dress up like a fairy!
