About Cordula

Utpalasia is a leading cultural organization specializing in North Indian Classical Kathak, Buddhist, Nepali folk, and Bollywood dance. We are frequent guest artists at the Smithsonian Institution, among other world-class venues. Our instrutors have a minimum of 20+ years experience in dance and are all professionally trained in India and Nepal. We provide cultural heritage programs, workshops, as well as public and private classes. Our approach is traditional with an emphasis on foundational skills and excellence. Today we incorporate contemporary elements into such styles as Bollywood and Kathak, creating original fusion works. We are deeply dedicated to promoting the Himalayan arts of Nepal, India, and Tibet through public engagement and private instruction.

I particularly enjoy sharing the richness of Asian heritage and the arts with people and being a bridge to cross-cultural appreciation. I work with people from all walks of life, from many ethnic groups, both here and abroad, and who have varying levels and skills, or sometimes, none at all. I aim to teach carefully, thoroughly, and with great passion and I love to see a student progress steadily to achieve their goal. I can't imagine my life without dance!

Living, working, and researching in over 30 countries left a very large impression and a desire to work in cross-cultural settings. I have been in the arts for almost my entire life, in one form or another, from Egyptology to writing and painting, creating unique handcrafted jewelry and accessories in the fashion industry, and performing and teaching dance.

We are professionally trained both in India, Nepal, and the U.S. and have been in this field for over 20 years. Our expertise makes us popular with small and large groups and we add a bit of culture alongside of dance to give a student an all around enriching experience.

We are members of the International Dance Council - CID (UNESCO) and offer an International Certification in Dance Studies.

About the lesson

We first appraise the student, using age, level, previous experience, and focus to assess what would be the best learning method for them. We use exercises to achieve good foundation skills and increase competency in dance. Our style of instruction is dedicated, patient, and fun. We love working with people and helping them succeed!

Our students span from ages 5 to 76 and everyone succeeds and has a great time in the process!

It is important to look for a qualified instructor, but equally as important to find someone you enjoy working with and who understands your needs and goals.

One of our most successful events is always the Annual Asian Kite Festival at the Smithsonian's Air & Space Museum. Our programs attract between 20-22,000 attendees and it is always the highlight of our year to present Asian music and dance to families and visitors. The best part remains our interactive portion where we get everyone up and participating in the fun!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It is important for every student to know how much time they will be able to devote to dance (daily practice is a must!), if they enjoy a challenge or just doing a simpler routine, and what their eventual goal is - personal fitness, a particular event, or perhaps a lifestyle change.

Details

Our semesters typically run for 8 weeks, however, many people have personal needs that fall short of that period, so we customize what we offer and the pricing for it as well. We generally travel to the student and this is also taken into consideration alongside the number of people taking a class - individual instruction vs. small group of 4 or more. We ask students to inquire and provide details before sending a quote.
