About Katherine

I know how difficult studying can be. I love helping students find the study habits and thinking styles that work best for them. Classrooms can't always provide the individualized attention many students need. I can help you to bridge the gap between the lessons you get in class, and what you really need.

Seeing the improvement in each student's understanding and watching their grades rise is very satisfying. It is fulfilling to see students achieve their learning goals.

I began tutoring in high school and continued through college. Initially, my friends asked to form study groups in subjects they were struggling with. I quickly moved to one on one sessions with my classmates.

I currently hold a B.S. in Cell & Molecular Biology from Iona College (New Rochelle, NY). I have experience in a number of subjects, particulary general Biology, Cell Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry.

While in college, I frequently headed study groups, and worked as a peer tutor.

About the lesson

Typically I like to get an idea of what material in the curriculum the student is currently working on. Next I like to determine if they have a good grasp on the essential foundations that support the more advanced concepts they may be struggling with.

I like to discuss how the concept was explained by their instructor, and what does or does not make sense to them. Then I like to find an alternative way of explaining the same content.

Most importantly, I like to determine what type of learning style each student has (visual, aural, or reading/writing). Determining their learning style is the most important factor in achieving success.

The ability of the teacher/tutor to match their teaching style to the student's learning style is critical to a successful relationship. Don't be hesitant to shop around for a tutor who is a good fit for your preferred learning style.

One of my college peers and tutoree was recently accepted in a graduate program! He was struggling with his science requirements in college, and worried that he wouldn't finish his bachelors. He is now persuing his MBA.
