About Melanie

Hi! My name is Melanie, I am a medical student at Tufts University School of Medicine, and recently completed my Master's degree in Medical Science at Boston University School of Medicine. I graduated from UCLA in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in psychobiology and neuroscience.

Between UCLA and graduate school, I worked as a behavioral therapist, employing the principles of applied behavioral analysis to help children with autism gain independence both at school and at home. This helped me develop a number of qualities which translate directly to tutoring, including patience, creativity, endurance and compassion. I have a number of other relevant experiences which I would be happy to discuss at length with you.

I have tutored all ages (elementary school through graduate school) over the last five years in a wide variety of subjects, as well as MCAT prep. Beyond teaching content, I strive to teach the cognitive processes that will help students succeed for years to come. I love using mnemonics, word association and pop culture references to encourage long term retention of the material, and to create a stress-free learning environment. One of the most informative classes I took at UCLA focused on the psychology of learning and the most effective ways to study. By applying this knowledge to my tutoring sessions, I help my students optimize their time and create effective study habits.

I began tutoring during my undergraduate education as a way to continue my past experiences mentoring younger students. As I have progressed in my education and experience, I have refined my process and found more effective and memorable ways to teach.

I am currently a medical student at Tufts University, and recently completed my Master's degree in Medical Science from Boston University. I attended UCLA for college and earned a BS in psychobiology and neuroscience.

Regarding tutoring experience, I have been working as a tutor for over 5 years, and have experience teaching a wide variety of classes and test prep. I also worked as a behavioral therapist for children with autism, which helped me develop my teaching skills even further.

About the lesson

I love to meet with new students to discuss their learning styles and goals for session, as well as set up a schedule in terms of meeting times.

Throughout my years tutoring, I have worked with students of all ages, ranging from kindergarten to graduate school. For the most part, though, my students are college aged or older, and are looking for help in advanced science classes. However, I am more than happy to help students of any level (:

I would suggest that beyond content expertise, finding a tutor that you feel comfortable with is the most important quality. As a current student myself, I completely understand the frustration that can accompany difficult coursework, and always seek to teach with patience, understanding, and a complete absence of judgement. I believe that this encourages the best retention of material, and helps increase my students' confidence in their own abilities.
