About Jamie

I love learning how the world works! And even more, I love sharing my excitement for the wonders of nature! Since graduating with a bachelor's in Genetics and Biotechnology in 2016 I have been teaching high school science in Idaho to help my students see how amazing our world is! I have taught various science classes such as biology, Earth science, botany, zoology, environmental science, and integrated science over the past 5 years.

As I started college, I knew I eventually wanted to teach, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to teach at the high school or collegiate level. As I proceeded through my coursework, I decided I wanted to help inspire other students to pursue scientific careers just as my middle and high school teachers did for me. I just love learning about our fascinating world and love sharing that with my students! After I graduated with my bachelor's degree in Genetics and Biotechnology, I completed a teacher preparation program and began teaching high school science in Idaho.

I have a bachelor's degree in Genetics and Biotechnology with an emphasis in Microbial Genetics. I have taken many courses in biology, chemistry, and microbiology that prepared me well for my career as a high school science teacher. I have been teaching for 5 years now at small schools where I taught all of the science courses available: biology, Earth science, environmental science, botany, zoology, integrated science, life science, and physical science. As such I have experience with a lot of different subjects, although I am most experienced in biological sciences.

About the lesson

I believe it is important to take a couple of minutes with a new student getting to know them and allowing them to get to know me so that they feel comfortable asking questions and seeking the help they need. I then like to probe with questions regarding their understanding of the necessary background information so that I can gauge where their point of confusion is and be able to address that before we move on to more complicated concepts.

I began teaching at an alternative high school where the majority of students had struggled academically for years, and often didn't see the value of education. I loved the challenge as I made the sciences more engaging and accessible--relating the concepts we learned about to what was going on in their own lives. I have also taught students that were more excited about education and strove to learn as much as possible. For them, I provided extension activites and projects to help stretch them and allow them to dive deeper into how the world works.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before a student asks me a question, I hope that they have tried to identify the source of their confusion. If they have not, I begin by helping them through that process by asking them about their understanding of concepts that are foundational to the concept they have questions about. By identifying the source of confusion, I can then tailor instruction to help my student fill in any gaps and master the current concepts.

Details

Online lessons are $20 per hour.

In person lessons are 30$ per hour for anyone that lives in the Treasure Valley area of Idaho. I will drive to your location.
