About Lisa

I am a self-admitted nerd who gets excited when discussing and teaching biology and related fields.

I have three tenants of teaching:

1. Biology builds on itself. A good foundation is key to success. I enjoy breaking down complex concepts into the base components and moving upward.

2. Relating concepts and material to everyday life is essential to absorbing, remembering, and applying educational materials.

3. All learning modalities are legitimate and valuable. Being able to cater to what a student needs is an essential part of teaching any subject.

I love to help anyone and everyone to understand and enjoy the many facets of biology.

After completing my degrees I went directly into teaching as that is where I find the most joy.

I have a bachelors in Biology from Sarah Lawrence College. A masters in Biomedical sciences from Drexel University College of Medicine and a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences from the University of Wyoming. I am currently an Assistant Professor at a Community College in Biology and Microbiology.

About the lesson

First, get to know the best modality of learning a student has been successful with in the past. Are they a visual learner, auditory, reading and writing, or kinesthetic learner? Next, determine the help they need, specific questions, filling in the gaps of a course, preparing for an exam, general interest, etc… And finally, execute the plan of attack by creating lesson plans, practice questions, home experiments, as well as provide access to any additional materials or resources that may be helpful.

I have worked with all types of students, from elementary to graduate level.

Be sure to find a teacher you like and respect but more importantly one who likes and respects you as well. Learning will never be successful in a negative environment. Additionally, one should find a teacher who can adapt to what you need at each session as that may change over time.

I just became a dog “parent” to an abandoned yellow lab. He is doing great in his new home and I couldn’t be happier to have him.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Schedule availability is always at the top of the list, as well as determining how much time you are willing to put into learning this field (tutoring, course, studying independently) as this will help you determine how frequently you would like to meet. Whether in person or online teaching will work for you. And what are your needs in terms of learning (specific questions, filling in the gaps of a course, preparing for an exam, general interest, etc…).

In person is $30 an hour with a minimum of 1 hour. Online is $25 an hour with a minimum of 1 hour.
