About Chelsie

I am a recent CU Boulder graduate in the Ecology & Evolutionary Biology department. I am very passionate about my field of evolutionary biology, and spent two years helping teach upper division biology classes at CU boulder. I would love to help your children learn and development a passion for science while they are out of school for the forceeable future!

I am not a full time tutor, I am a cook for the mountain sun pub group, but am out of work due to COVID. However, I do love teaching because it is the best way to solidify information for yourself while helping others learn. I gained my passion for science at a young age from an incredible elementary school teacher, and would love to pass that feeling along to a new generation.

One of the professors at CU approached me to become a teaching assistant for his 3000 level evolutionary biology class, and I loved it so much I continued to help teach the class for 3 semesters in total.

In my time as a teaching assistant at CU boulder, we were required to take a class on micro-teaching. Over the course of the semester we learned ways to interact with groups and individual students to best help their learning process. We also learned different techniques to make the learning process more interactive, which studies have shown to drastically increase the amount of information retained by students, rather than a lecture based learning system.

About the lesson

First, a level of previous understanding needs to be established. This can typically be done with some form of a "pre test" or just a general discussion of the subject. In addition, I like to ask what about the subject excites the student, and what about the subject worries the student. This gives me 1) an understanding of what specifically needs to be focused on and 2) a way to connect with the student and make these subjects more easily understood.

I have only worked with upper division college students in a teaching capacity, but have worked with children as a nanny on and off for about 10 years, so I am very comfortable teaching children.

Science can be a scary subject for some, I would advise hiring a teacher you are comfortable with and encourages you to learn in whatever way helps you. My favorite teachers in grade school and college, were those that made learning fun and never made me feel like I couldn't ask a question!

Since I just graduated in December, I have moved from Boulder back to my hometown of Denver! I am very excited to be back.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What about this subject confuses me? What about the subject excites me? What do I want to know more about, and what do I need to learn to understand it?
