About Adrian

Our Program Philosophy

Teaching is an integral part of coaching. We believe a coach must be a teacher. This is true at all levels of coaching.

We at J14 will breakdown all skill work into multiple progressions. You may see a basketball activity as having two basic steps. Our experienced coaches realize that some activities might be better communicated to athletes by breaking the drill into four or five fundamental points. It may take more time to teach skills and routines but is so worth it in order educate an athlete who has little or no experience. In addition to knowledge of coaching techniques and tactics, we will also show patience, understanding and insight when working with our young athletes.

We will learn as much as possible about each individual's player’s background remaining alert to each individual athlete's particular temperament, skill level, and physical ability. We will keep instructions simple and repeat explanations as often as possible. Demonstrate each aspect of the skill activity. Explain "why" as well as "how." This helps the athlete understand "what" is expected.

Instructions will have to be repeated often not only in a practice session, but from one session to the next. Skills from a previous session may have been forgotten. Attention spans of athletes can be extremely short.

Athletes will watch, but then quickly be given the opportunity to try the skill for themselves.

We will show your child that basketball is fun. We will always show our athletes enthusiasm when coaching. Incorporate fun drills and games into the practice sessions. We will encourage our athletes by emphasizing what they have accomplished. However, continue to challenge them to improve and do more.

We operate our business with honesty, compassion, and prudence which can be summed up by a quote by Theodore Roosevelt: “The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.”

We believe when it comes to teaching plays to youth basketball players, it is better to teach them concepts on how to play the game of basketball no matter skill level in order to ensure team cohesiveness.
