About Kelsay

I love helping others learn and thrive! It's about you and getting you to understand the material. That means we may use life examples to understand or maybe hands on activities. Learning doesn't have to be difficult, let's make it productive.

I'm trained to work with children with special needs, young and older children, and know many subject areas. I love learning new things about the people I work with and using their interest to make learning better for them. Adapting and changing the information to help better understand. I love a challenge and love to learn new things as well!

I have always loved working with people to help them understand problems and work through things they don't know. My grandparents are still substitute teaching after they retired from 40+ years of teaching! They really instilled a love for teaching in me from an early age. Even in elementary school I helped tutor the younger kids. It's always been a passion of mine and one I love to continue to grow and learn in.

I have a bachelor's degree from Northwestern College in Orange City Iowa. My degree was in Biblical and Theological Studies, Youth Ministry and Christian Education, and Missions. I have also been certified in different branches of ministry. Along with this, I've volunteered as a tutor and helper for multiple after school programs throughout high school and college.

I'm currently pursuing a Masters of Divinity degree and continue with online educational programs that grow my knowledge beyond just Biblical studies.

About the lesson

I will typically like to know the students learning style. What helps you learn? What can I do to make sure you understand better? Which is also questions I'll ask throughout the time together to ensure we are on the same page.

I do not like to tell the students the answers but help them figure it out themselves. So I sit down and help them evaluate and (if needed) research their questions topic to line out what they already know. Real life examples and different framing of the question are ways I like to use to help the student as well.

At the end of the session, I like to ask the student again if they understood what we went over, maybe ask them for a quick overview of what they learned, and make sure we have everything set for a new meeting if that is what they want to continue with.

I have worked with students from all backgrounds. In college, many of the students I helped tutor had developmental disabilities and needed special attention in specific areas unique to each individual. I've been trained in special needs ministries so those have been some of my primary students. However, I've worked with the easy students who don't need much help to the difficult ones that no one else wants to take on. I'm experienced in all of them and willing to help whoever needs it.

One piece of advice I would give you, especially when deciding on a teacher in Biblical studies, is ask them their specific area of the Bible they primarily teach. Some people teach more Old Testament so their New Testament knowledge is limited or vise versa. Some specialize in missions or other areas.

I also would ask them their teaching style and make sure it works with your learning style. I've had professors who's teaching style is fast lectures and little discussion. That is opposite of how I like the learn. I've had professors who all they do is discussion. In order to have a successful time knowing if your teacher will truly help you, these are important things to know.

A third piece of advice is to never be afraid to ask questions beforehand and during the time of studying. Teachers love to answer questions and sometimes asking a question beforehand can give you a better idea of who it is your working with. For example, my one professor (before he even met a single one of us) emailed us a list of 10 questions. They were questions like "Whats your favorite Bible verse or story and why?", "What is a fact about you that is unique?", "What do you hope to gain from this time of studying together?". There were several others but the point is, asking some personal questions that help you get to know the person can help ease the tension and make you both more comfortable.

One of the most recent events I am fond of was graduating college. College was extremely difficult for myself. However, I was able to walk across that stage with the honor of Magna Cum Laude and a double major (and a minor) from my department. It was an amazing achievement. It proved to myself, my family, and everyone who doubted me that if you set your mind to something you can achieve it! It doesn't mean it'll be easy but itll always be worth it.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would suggest five primary questions to think through before and during talks with a teacher:

1. What is my learning style and how can they use that to help me? This can be a tricky one. But think about if you work better hands on, pictures to describe the problems, lecture, discussion, trial and error, etc. What makes you click is extremely important so your teacher can help make learning work for you!

2. What do I want to gain from this time? This is important each meeting but especially before meeting your teacher. Come in with an optimistic mind. And if the teacher doesn't match perfectly what you expected to gain, you can give them grace and a second try or you have the right to ask for someone else.

3. Am I going to feel comfortable with them? What could make me more comfortable? This is a KEY questions to me. Comfortablility of my students in priority. If you are uncomfortable about something, speak up. But always ask this before you say yes to meeting with that teacher.

4. What accommodations or extra things could my teacher do to help me? This can be a hard question for students. When they hear "accommodations" they think of special help. But change that thinking! What do you need to thrive? Maybe it's a distraction free work space so a public coffee shop isn't going to work well for you or maybe that background noise helps. Maybe you need things read a bit slower and described more in detail than what's given. Maybe extra time for a session to help you think. If there is something you need, within reason of course (don't come in thinking "well I need these 10 things to help me or I can't learn"), ask yourself this and make sure to tell your teacher.

5. What is it that I specifically need help on? One of the hardest things when asking for help is knowing where you are having a hard time. Make sure to consider what part of the work or subject you need help to focus on, so that you make the best of you time with your teacher.
