About Tom

Pipershire's ambition is is to impart indepth understanding of the Great Highland Bagpipe, the music it can create, and the cultural and historical significance which stems therefrom.

Tom Hinrichsen has been playing since 2001, beginning as a boy. He had the unique experience of a renaiscence of learning at age 20, which brought him to Chicago in 2013, and enabled him to be competitive at the highest international level. The result is a blended understanding of two aspects of the bagpiping community: that of his roots, as a hobbyist; and that of his passion as a high-level competitor.

Nomatter your interest level, you will receive patient, interested, and well-informed attention during your lessons.

Once I became "good," students began to be referred to me by other bagpipers. Pipers also appraoch me for help imroving their existing skills. Execellent pupils make excellent teachers, and vice versa.

I have been playing and teach for almost twenty years. What sets me apart from most instructors is that I learned both as a child as an an adult. First at a "hobbyist" level, and then, as an adult, at an expert level. I use these perspectives to help understand students' goals, abilities, and the proper pacing.

About the lesson

The most important aspect of any teacher/student relationship is communication. My job is to figure out how best to say things in order for you to understand, so that you can make efficient progress. To faciliate that, we will discuss wht peaks your interests, why you want to learn, your goals, abilities, etc. Then I will explain the "road-map" from beginner to bagpiper, the timeframe, etc. And then we'll begin!

I have worked with children as young as eight, adults as old as seventy-four, adults in their twenties, teens, both men and women. Much of my experience comes from working with bands.

The best advice I can give applies to everthing you'll ever do: If you're going to do it, then DO it. Set a realistic goal, meet it, and re-evaluate.

Details

Pipershire's fee is $30 per half hour or $50 per hour, plus travel.

Accomodations can be made if warranted.
