About Josh

Following a year-long placement at Toyota Manufacturing UK, I am currently in my fifth year of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham. Throughout my education, I have developed a great passion for mathematics and physics, and applying these principles to solve real-life problems. With 100+ hours of A Level and GCSE tutoring experience, I am confident in delivering high quality lessons to suit your needs. I find tuition extremely rewarding, I love sharing my passion with others and seeing students improve in their studies. I understand the difficulties that may be encountered at school, whether it is an upcoming exam, conceptual understanding or preparing for the next chapter. I am here to help!

I am a firm believer in a common saying, 'practice makes perfect!'. Not only is it important to understand a topic, but this understanding can often be very limited until you begin applying it to different questions. The more you apply and push your understanding, the more confident you will become. As a result of this, I ensure that I include a variety of past exam questions in every session, to consolidate what we have learnt. Furthermore, I cater each session to every individuals' needs and as I get to know each tutee, I adjust my teaching strategy accordingly. This helps to get the most out of every session.

About the lesson

I structure my lessons based on the individual needs of the tutee, to match their learning style. This usually involves taking some time at the beginning of the lesson to explain important concepts, using clear diagrams, reinforced by going through some past-paper questions at the end of the session. This gives the student an insight into what to expect in the exam, and helps them to gain confidence. Feedback from the tutee is highly-valued, and I always ensure that I take this into consideration when preparing future lessons. I often encourage the student to give feedback, by asking how they felt the lesson went at the end of the session.

An effective way to measure progress is to revisit topics that have been previously covered. This helps to track their progress, and reinforces the learning from the previous week. Revisiting topics and repetition greatly assists in consolidating deeper understanding.

As a tutor, it is important to encourage learning and a good learning environment. To achieve this, I convey enthusiasm and passion in my teaching style, give students praise where it is deserved, and always view mistakes as an integral part of the learning process. It is important that the tutee views mistakes in a positive manner! Also, as an undergraduate engineer, I enjoy relating maths and science concepts to my own experiences; showing the tutee how they can be applied to the real-world, to deepen their understanding!
