About Andrew

I have been tutoring mathematics since 2012 and have also formally taught lectures at the university level. I have had to deal with quite an array of different learners, so have found many different ways of clearing up confusing material.

I have been playing piano since I was 6 years old, having also taken lessons for a year under Paul Ostrovsky at SUNY Purchase. With the years of experience I have in music, I can aid most people in getting competent at playing the piano.

Many students get frustrated when trying to deal with something that confuses them, even to a small degree. When I see the look in a person's eye when something finally clicks after I've explained the topic of confusion, there is nothing more rewarding.

In terms of music, I love being able to guide someone on the path to deep expression. Music is universal; you don't have to speak the same language for a person to be able to appreciate the beauitful tones you create with your instrument, to feel the emotion your pouring out into the keys.

I worked at a tutoring center at my second undergraduate university and continued at Stony Brook, through a center and privately. Formal lectures happened for me one I got into graduate school.

Teaching piano came about when I was playing constantly at my first university. People would pass by, hear me play, and become interested in playing themselves.

I have a M.S in AMS (Applied Mathematics & Statistics) and a B.S in Mathematics and AMS. I have been tutoring for over 4 years and formally teaching at university level for over 1 year.

I've mainly been focused on mathematics, but I taught piano to a few people at my first university, back in 2011-2012.

About the lesson

All kinds lie in the following:

-those who knew where they were confused and just needed a bit of the proper explaining to go along on their own

-those who couldn't tell me specifically where they were lost (an answer like "everywhere"), essentially needing the material to be broken down entirely from the beginning

Make sure you are motivated before hiring someone. Even if we have the best session imaginable, you still need to study on your own and continue to make sense of the subject matter. Especially in the case of piano, I can certainly teach you fundamentals, but the true mastery lies within what you do on your own.

Mathematics: $80-$100/hr for anything below Calculus III. After that, it's up for discussion.
