About Ryan

I work with students daily as part of my PhD candidacy. The students I meet at the University of Washington come from across the Unites States and beyond, so I am never without broad and up-to-date experience regarding current educational trends—what students are learning and how it is being taught to them, and how I can work with that foundation most effectively.

It is rare for a professional mathematician—including those who teach for a living—to receive formal training in instructional practices. In additon to pursuing such training as part of my graduate program, I have had the privilege of mentoring new instructors and very often learning from my mentees how I can continue to grow as a teacher.

It's incredible getting to talk for a living about the things I love, and to work with students studying what I love. Not every student will enjoy mathematics like I do, and while I respect every individual's personal goals, I nevertheless enjoy trying to get them to enjoy their time studying math.

The foundation of my pedagogical style is to tell the story that underlies the math that we're doing—to identify the main characters, the conflicts, and the resolutions. Some students find this helps them more than others, but all of them agree that it makes the math more compelling, engaging, and memorable.

I first began tutoring students in economics as a side job in college. Since then, I found my love of teaching and branched out to languages and mathematics. My classroom experience began upon entering graduate school in 2019, and teaching advanced mathematics has been my occupation ever since.

I am an active university instructor and researcher at the University of Washington with an MS in Mathematics. In addition to taking advanced courses on teaching and mathematics instruction, I have 3 years of experience teaching in the classroom and many more tutoring students one-on-one.

About the lesson

I like to know about what sort of course the student is in (or what their independent learning goals are) and what parts of that course aren't going well. Written work is extremely helpful for this: it tells a story just like an essay and it sheds light on the reason the course goals aren't being attained or that grades aren't as strong as the student hopes or expects. This, and some information about what the student hopes to achieve, are generally plenty for me work with the student to craft a plan of study and decide how our meetings will fit into that plan.

I have worked with freshman high school students, third-year graduate students, and everyone in between.

Perhaps the most underappreciated quality to look for is affability. There are seldom step-by-step procedures or general-purpose equations for solving problems in advanced mathematics, and becoming comfortable with discomfort is key to success. Students should feel confident that they can explore the possible ways to solve a problem, and that their tutor is there to make sure their explorations lead them in the right direction towards a solution.

At the end of every quarter, I always receive a few particularly heartfelt thank-yous that never fail to keep my love of teaching alive and well. This past year was particularly special, as I taught undergraduates and graduate students who haven't received in-person math instruction in years.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
(1) What do I want to get out of tutoring? Do I want to excel in a course, master the material for use in real life, or just pass the class? (All are respectable answers!)

(2) How is tutoring going to help me attain that goal? What does the tutor contribute that I don't already have at my disposal?

(3) What specifically am I struggling with? (Pretend you're going to see the doctor. You'll need to describe exactly what your symptoms are for an accurate diagnosis!)

My flat rate for one-on-one tutoring is $55/hour. This takes into account the time I spend preparing "off the books" to make sure our time in the tutoring sessions is as efficient and effective as possible. Please inquire for additional information about other arrangements like group tutoring.
