About Spencer

I'm Spencer! I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from Colorado School of Mines and am currently pursuing a Master's degree in Bioengineering. Tutoring math has been a lifelong tradition of mine that began with me helping my little sister with homework. In college, I began my career as a paid tutor when I was recognized as an excellent student and offered a position. I tutored my peers in classes I had already taken such as Calculus, Differential Equations, Physics, Chemistry, and more. I had set hours each week that I worked in the tutoring center, during which students could come in and seek help for classes they were struggling with that I had already taken (this was denoted on the tutoring center website). This challenged me by constantly putting me in situations where I had to help students understand a variety of complex subjects and led me to learn that the best way to help a student understand a subject is to start with what they know and help guide them towards figuring out a solution for themselves. This proved to be an effective technique, as I had many repeat students.

For the past year, I have worked and continue to work as a tutor for the ACT and SAT college entrance exams with the company Test Geek. The method of teaching I employ with my students now is known as the Socratic Method. Through this method (named for the Greek philosopher Socrates) I guide students to an understanding by asking series of questions designed to lead the student to the answer through their own thinking. It is a tried and true technique that can best be used to teach in the one-on-one style of tutoring. Practicing this method has furthered my understanding of how to find what the student understands and aid them in figuring out a problem themselves. Learning through this type of thinking is invaluable to students going forward because it helps them learn to think for themselves.

The subjects I most excel at are math and science, especially physics; throughout my college career, however, I've also taken classes such as Organic Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, and Geology, and trust in my ability to help students with related subjects. I'm an easygoing person and believe in doing what I can to help my students feel comfortable and confident both in and out of tutoring sessions.

I take great pleasure in helping students find that "a-ha!" moment with subjects they are finding particularly difficult. I also think that it's an invaluable tool that will serve students for the rest of their lives if I can help them to better think for themselves.

My start with teaching was with my little sister when I helped her with her homework. I like to joke that she is the most difficult student I've ever had. I started getting paid to tutor in college when I was recognized as an excellent student and offered a position.

I have a bachelors degree in engineering and am currently pursuing a masters degree in biomedical engineering. I have extensive math and physics knowledge. During my undergraduate degree I worked as a peer tutor. I had certain hours I was in the tutoring center and other students would come in with questions relating to any number of subjects such as calculus, chemistry, algebra, physics, etc. It was my job to help them through the problems.

My typical processs for working with a new student is to have our first session be a slower, "get-to-know-you" session. We discuss why they chose to get a tutor, what they feel they need help with, what they feel they are good at, things they enjoy, things they don't enjoy, etc. After the first session we develop a plan to achieve the goals of the student and then pursue this plan with regular check-ins to make sure we are on track.

I've worked mainly with high school and college age students, but I have volunteered at events that help teach younger children engineering skills.

Find a teacher that you feel comfortable with. Find one that will challenge you to think and find the answer for yourself rather than giving you a lecture.

I recently went on a fantastic hike to a place called Cheesman Canyon. It was a trail along the South Platte river much enjoyed by fly flisherman.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do I feel comfortable saying that I still don't understand even if the tutor has explained it multiple times? (should be Yes)

What study habits do I have right now in this subject?

What are my main frustrations with learning this subjet?
