About Catharine
I'm a part-time Theatre Professor at Loyola Marymount University, and I am passionate about teaching acting!
I trained in the UK as a classical actress at the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre School - and worked for years as an actress for the Royal Shakespeare Company and other theatres in England.
I bring together many different eclectic modalities to explore the power of breath in experiencing emotion (so you don't have to think about nuclear war, or dead cats to get into a role!).
I have a PhD in Religious Studies, exploring spiritual experiences in Western theatre, and have written a complete text on theatre for Routledge Performance Studies, Oxford, UK.
(concealed information)
I truly love coaching and teaching acting. I'm excited about helping people of all ages find their creativity and want to help you share that with others.
I'm excellent with teaching Classical Theatre techniques, coaching for film & stage auditions and of course once you book the job as well.
At LMU I've been teaching Acting Shakespeare, Vocal Development, Beginning Acting, all levels of Scene Study and a number of other courses for several years. I've even taught some strictly academic courses, but I prefer to work with exploring creativity.
I taught some Viewpoints classes in London at The Actor's Center ages ago. When I returned to LA after working in England for years, I started teaching at Loyola Marymount University. I'm still teaching there part time - so I've been teaching acting professionally full time for over 20 years.
I'm proud to say that I've always had waiting lists for my classes, and have literally thousands of wonderful reviews from students. That makes me happy!
Sooo much 😂 PhD, MFA, MA, BA - all kinds of degrees in:
Theatre, Classical Acting, Film Production, The Study of Mysticism & Religious Experience and Religious Studies.
I'm fascinated by ways that we can use emobodied spiritual practices to enhance our performances - and that's a large part of what I teach.
I teach exercises from a variety of emobodied spiritual traditions as well as classical theatre technique - making it relevant to what you need.
As an actress I worked for years in England. I'm proud of working for the Royal Shakespeare Company as an actress.

Spending a few minutes getting a student to get in touch with their breath - it's extraordinary how certain techniques that I teach work to bring the mind into the present moment. Which is where all the creativity is.
We have all kinds of exercises to get you into the moment - to help uncover your own creativity.
I focus on technique - but the British kind of technique - particularly vocal techniques! It's the kind of work that wins all the awards. Working with the exercises that I share with you will set you apart from all the other actors in LA. Truly. And I love seeing that happen for people!
All types!! What's most exciting for me is how passionate and interested to learn the student is - not what they've done before. I've coached deeply successful actors and newbies.
As long as the student / client is willing to learn - I have a TON of things to teach.
Find someone who's passionate, and has been a success at what they do. And make sure they don't put you down, or drag you down!
Find someone you enjoy being with!
I'm also a volunteer Art of Living Meditation Teacher. It's awesome. I love seeing people of all ages drop years of stress in just a few days.
It's magic - but it's really science.
But it feels like magic.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I like the fact that students can be open to all possibilites - including ones they're not even aware of at the beginning!
I think it's important to have an idea of where you want to go, but it's also important to be flexible too.

Being taught by Catherine first hand has changed me for the better as an actor. Whether it be getting into the mindset of a character, finding the meaning between the lines or gaining confidence before an audition, Catherine has techniques and tips to help you. Her positivity is unlike any other and is a welcome addition to her approach on coaching actors. Catherine is very knowledgeable about acting and understands what casting directors are looking for. She truly cares for your success and is always there for you when you need guidance. If you want to take your acting to the next level, Catherine can help you reach your goals. She helped me gain my confidence back in acting again and I'm confident she'll do the same for those who take her classes.
Catharine is THE BEST!! I met her at LMU during my junior year and she became my favorite teacher very quickly. Her ability to make every single class fun and also filled with valuable knowledge at the same time is truly remarkable. Because of her skills and years-long experience in the entertainment industry I started working with her one on one as an acting coach and mentor. Catharine has a huge resume (check it out!!) that really reflects her approach of teaching on this level of expertise. I can truly say I've seen progress in my work because of her help and guidance. I can't even describe how much she has helped me to evolve and grow as an actress - I went from never having Shakespeare performed to doing Shakespeare-monologues in front of professionals, and getting callbacks!!
She worked with me on auditions, self-tapes and drama school applications - always with the same enthusiasm and positivity! I can always rely on her, and trust her professionalism. Not to mention that she cares about you deeply, and genuinely wants you to succeed. Catharine has really been a big support for me as a professor, mentor and coach. One of the most wonderful teachers I have experienced in my lifetime! She cares genuinely and is quite inspiring!"
Professor Dada and her class are inherently joyful, educational and impactful. My life has improved vastly, as I’ve become stronger as an actor, more confident as an artist, and more loving as a person..."
People literally find their voice because of her. And that is something truly amazing to witness and be a part of."
Catharine is the most inspiring and helpful instructor that a student could ask for! I came to her with a monologue that I had already recorded, which I felt pretty good about. It didn't take long before we essentially scrapped it and changed everything. She didn't let me off easy. I had to work very hard, which paid off tremendously. By the time I completed the re-worked monologue with her, it was worlds better than what I had brought to the stage, to begin with, and if I hadn't brought it to her in the first place, I wouldn't have recognized my potential. So thankful to have found Catharine!
She is an excellent teacher because she allows you to reflect on what you can grow in while simultaneously giving ideas that you might have never tried or been open to. Always 100% supportive and allows room for growth without feeling insecure and afraid to try new things in acting. You’ll be surprised how much you’ll notice your growth from start to finish!
This course helped me tremendously. I was at a place in my life where I was tired of having to sacrifice my emotional well being for acting and this course taught me a new way to approach acting that is so much better for my mental health. I wish I could take this class again.
