About Brody

What makes me excited about what I teach is that I am deeply passionate about each subject as well as about helping others succeed.

I began writing, performing, and taking photos when I was a child. Currently, I am a working professional in each of these fields in New York City.

My degree is in Drama from the University of California, Irvine where I specialized in both acting and playwriting.

As for photography, I mostly specialize in performance, rehearsal, behind-the-scenes, and landscape styles. I am experienced in both film and digital. With film's growing popularity I would like to emphasize that I am particularly interested in helping people start their analogue journey. I have a wealth of advice on what cameras, stocks, lenses, and development techniques are best for beginners. A sampling of my work can be seen here:

I have always found that I am more drawn to being a part of a creative community than I am to the actual results I create. As such, I have found that teaching is a natural calling to me. Nothing brings me greater joy than being a part of somebody's creative journey, whether it be towards making a photograph they are proud of, working on a monologue until they feel confident auditioning with it or finding their creative voice within their writing.

My first time teaching was as a tutor in high school. I had better grades than my friends so their moms asked if I could do anything to help them out. I realized quickly that I truly loved helping people realize their potential and I haven't stopped since.

I have a BA in Drama from the University of California, Irvine where I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.972 GPA. My training there was specifically in acting and playwriting. Since then I have written and performed professionally across the US.

For photography, I have been working freelance since I was a teenager. A sampling of my portfolio can be found here.

About the lesson

I like to offer a discounted first lesson to make sure we are a good fit. I'll introduce myself and my creative/teaching styles and offer a comprehensive overview of what to expect. I'll then ask what you are interested in getting out of these lessons, and from there we can collaboratively come up with a specific plan to achieve your goals. What's more important to me than any specific milestone is your sense of growth.

I have worked with students ranging from those who were struggling to keep passing grades in high school English to folks in their 60s who wanted to learn how to take a compelling photo. Whether you are new to these subjects, brushing up on them, or looking to advance the skills you already have, I am thrilled to help you on your journey.

It is important to find somebody whose teaching style and temperament complement how you learn. For instance, I have had teachers before whom I could tell were brilliant but couldn't understand that I am an auditory learner rather than a visual or tactile one. I am open to any student, but I'm also aware that my style and personality will make me a better fit for some than others, and the best way to figure that out is with full transparency and nonjudgmental honesty in our first lesson.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think it's important to see if your personalities are complementary. For instance, I would describe myself as somebody who is deeply empathetic, intellectually curious, and conversational in tone. I'm also an INFP-T, in case you're interested in personality types. Some questions that could be helpful to see if a teacher is going to be a good fit for you might be:
