About Rachel

I am an experienced certified teacher with over 15 years of classroom experience supporting students in English, reading, writing, academic skills, and foundational math. My background as a special education teacher has given me strong experience helping students who need clear explanations, extra patience, structure, and a step-by-step approach to learning.

I understand that students often need more than someone who can give them the answer. They need someone who can explain the process, help them organize their thinking, and build their confidence along the way. My teaching style is patient, professional, and supportive, while still holding students accountable for learning and growth.

I have worked with middle school and high school students in whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one settings. I am comfortable adapting lessons to fit a student’s needs, whether they are trying to catch up, strengthen a specific skill, prepare for an assignment or test, or simply feel less overwhelmed by schoolwork.

My goal is to create a learning space where students feel respected, supported, and capable. I believe students make the most progress when lessons are clear, expectations are reasonable, and they are given strategies they can use independently over time.

About the lesson

My approach as a tutor is patient, structured, and focused on helping students understand the “why” behind each step. I know that many students do not struggle with Algebra because they are incapable. They struggle because the process has not been explained in a way that makes sense to them. My tutoring style focuses on breaking problems down into clear, manageable steps, helping students notice patterns, and giving them strategies they can use again instead of just memorizing answers.

A typical lesson begins by identifying what the student is currently working on, where they feel confused, and what skill needs to be strengthened. From there, I model the process step by step, guide the student through practice problems, and gradually release responsibility so they can try problems more independently. I use questioning, visuals, examples, error correction, and repeated practice to help students build confidence and accuracy. When needed, I also help students organize their work, slow down their thinking, and check their answers more effectively.

What sets me apart is my background as an experienced classroom teacher and special education teacher. I am used to explaining concepts more than one way, supporting students who feel overwhelmed, and helping learners build confidence without shame or pressure. My lessons are best for middle school and high school students who need support with Algebra, pre-Algebra, foundational math skills, problem-solving, homework help, test preparation, or simply understanding math in a clearer, more structured way.
