About Kwanza
Greetings! I am a veteran educator who has worked in education since 2007, serving as a foreign language teacher (English, Spanish, Mandarin) and tutoring various subjects including k-12 math and ELA. Most recently I have served as a full-time 1st grade teacher. I have a strong focus on English literacy, believing that every child can succeed. As a foreign language tutor I have great empathy for my students as I have made the journey in foreign language acquisition, so I know what it takes to achieve such goals. I speak Spanish and Mandarin (still a student of both) and I enjoy continuing to learn about the world and its people. I focus in the beginning on a thorough diagnostic assessment, which helps me pinpoint my student's areas of need. From there I develop a pedagogical plan, indicating hard goals and ways to achieve them. A typical lesson plan will follow a scaffolding approach where the sequence is "I do", "We do", and then "You do". By the end of the lesson students have demonstrated mastery through independent demonstration and can teach the concept to others. At the end of the lesson students might engage in a fun game or activity. For my language learners, I provide a healthy immersive environment with lots of comprehensive input which demands instant results. For k-12 reading and math, I focus on building student confidence. I am highly energizing and very positive, understanding that students who are well encouraged in their abilities and have seen that they can succeed go very far. These lessons are for children and adults. I have experience teaching elementary, middle, and high school levels.
