Objectives: Understand when and why formal letters are used. Identify the key structural components of a formal letter, including sender's and recipient's addresses, date, salutation, body, closing, and signature. Recognize and apply formal language, vocabulary, and tone. Successfully compose a formal letter for a specific purpose. Lesson Activities: 1. Introduction & Brainstorming (10-15 mins): Begin by asking students: "When would you use a formal letter?" and "What makes a letter formal?". Discuss scenarios where formal letters are appropriate, such as job applications, complaints, or official requests. 2. Formal vs. Informal (15-20 mins): Present two sample letters on the same topic, one formal and one informal. Lead a class discussion to compare the two, focusing on differences in greetings, closings, sentence structure, and word choice. 3. Analyzing a Sample Letter (20-25 mins): Provide students with a well-written formal letter. Have students work in groups to identify and label each part of the letter (e.g., addresses, date, salutation, body paragraphs, closing). Use a word bank of formal phrases and ask students to highlight these in the sample letter and then find others. 4. Planning and Drafting (30-40 mins): Assign students a specific purpose for writing a formal letter, such as a complaint or a letter of interest. Guide them through planning the content and structure of their letter using a planning frame or template. Provide a rubric to guide students as they draft their letters. 5. Peer Review and Revision (20-25 mins): Pair students up to exchange and review each other's drafts using a checklist and the rubric. Encourage constructive feedback focusing on the identified objectives, such as correct format and formal language. Have students revise their letters based on the feedback received. Wrap-up and Assessment: Ask students to share one or two key takeaways from the lesson. Use formative assessment methods, like reviewing the drafted letters or a quick quiz, to gauge understanding.
