About Breanna

Since diligently organizing all my stuffed animals in a row in front of the chalkboard in my home at the age of 5, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I entered the University of Toronto's Concurrent Education Program in 2010 while completing a Double Major in Psychology and English Literature. I have since had the unique and very educational experience of teaching in three Canadian provinces, working for the Learning Disability Association, and taking additional qualification courses in Special Education, English Language Learners, and First Nation, Metis, and Inuit Studies.

I believe that the fundamental goal of education is to foster curiosity, create a student-centered learning environment, and instill positive self-efficacy. By achieving these goals, students can become critical thinking, independent, and contributing members of society. Through my education and teaching experiences I have come to recognize the importance of a learning community which extends beyond the confines of a classroom and involves teachers, students, parents, tutors, and the community working collaboratively in the lifelong journey of learning.

As an educator, I am committed to providing a comprehensive, interactive, and inclusive educational experience. I am dedicated to creating a learning environment that is accessible to learners of various strengths and abilities as well as allowing students to take an active role in their own learning. I have had many years of experience working with students of all ages and exceptionalities. Through the process of a universal design for learning and differentiated instruction, I am able to reach each student at their individual learning level. I encourage students to take ownership over their own learning by involving students in the assessment process. This student-centered approach to learning allows all students to become involved in the learning process, and become critical thinkers in an interactive learning environment.

I am devoted to student learning and academic success. I firmly believe that curiosity is the foundation of learning. When learning is relevant and relatable, students develop curiosity which instills a desire to discover. Therefore, by creating a learning environment that is authentic and of interest to my students, I can foster curiosity and motivate student learning. I also believe that by creating a collaborative learning environment where students and tutors work together to construct knowledge, I can encourage student success. In this type of learning environment, students have a responsibility and an active role in their own learning. Each student’s experiences and ideas are relevant and can contribute to the creation of knowledge. This approach honours all students’ experiences and promotes a culture of listening, respect, and cooperation. Moreover, I recognize the importance of a partnership between parents and myself. Open communication and cooperation between myself and home are integral to supporting students in the most comprehensive way possible. I believe that it is my responsibility to not only become aware of my students’ uniqueness and individuality, but also to enhance this bond by becoming partners with parents and families in order to further support student learning and academic success.

I believe that learning and the construction of knowledge is a lifelong process. I am dedicated to my students and the community and recognize that learning is not isolated to the classroom. For this reason, I believe it is vital to honour students’ personal experiences and individuality. As an educator, I recognize the lifelong learning process by having an open-mind, listening, and continually researching and reviewing educational data and strategies to improve my own pedagogical practices. I believe that the only way I can ensure that my students develop positive self-efficacy is by truly understanding, respecting, and becoming involved in the lives, traditions, and experiences of my students. In order to entirely support and understand our students, we must support them within and beyond the "classroom".

In the past 7 years, I have had the incredibly educational experience of teaching in three Canadian provinces (Ontario, Quebec (Nunavik), and New Brunswick), including the remote Inuit community of Salluit, Nunavik. Collectively, this has allowed me to compare and contrast curriculums, gain experience teaching students from extraordinarily different backgrounds, and work in many schools. I have worked in an Indigenous community, with English Language Learners, students with large gaps in their education, challenging behaviours, many different exceptionalities, and in environments that had very little resources for students.

These experiences have made me into a self-starter who always takes initiative, is adaptable, resourceful, compassionate, organized, and even more passionate about education. I believe so strongly that teaching is a privilege. As an educator, I work as hard as I can to be the best I can be because that is what my students deserve.

I strive to create lessons that are relevant and interesting by making connections to the community and beyond. I become passionate about developing unit and lesson plans that were high interest, involved movement, Universal Design for Learning, differentiation, and inquiry-based in order to reach each student.
