About Marlene

I am very passionate about languages and have been teaching German for over 15 years.

I have a Master's degree in Transcultural Studies and, in addition, completed a Diploma in Teaching German. During my studies, I worked at the Foreign Language Centre at the University of Bremen and at the Carl Duisburg Centrum, a school specialising in German as a foreign language. I supported students from a wide range of backgrounds in their learning process.

Since then, I have been teaching German privately as well as in schools and language institutes in Germany, Australia and England. I have experience teaching students of all ages and levels, from young children and school students to adults. I have taught students preparing for school exams, including GCSE and A-level German, as well as students learning German for personal, academic or professional reasons.

I am teaching German both individually and in small groups, adapting my lessons to the individual needs, goals and learning styles of my students.

I love working with students and language learners and enjoy helping them build confidence in German. For me, it is important that lessons are both effective and enjoyable, so I always tailor my classes to each student’s individual needs, goals and interests.

Whether you are just starting to learn German, want to improve your general communication skills, need support with grammar, vocabulary, speaking or writing, or are preparing for GCSE or A-level German, I can adapt our lessons to focus on what you need most.

My online lessons are relaxed, interactive and personalised, and online teaching has worked very well for my students of all ages.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am a native German speaker. I was born and grew up in Germany (close to Hannover).
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Germany is said to be the 'Land der Denker und Dichter' - the country of thinkers and poets. There have been many (famous and not so famous) people that have shaped the German language and culture such as Goethe (writer) or Kant (philosopher).
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

There are many great words in German that are very descriptive and unique. One word, for example, is "wanderlust." It doesn't have an exact translation in English, but it roughly means a desire to be somewhere far away, a desire to travel and see new places.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

German is my native language. It is the language I grew up with and the one I use in my home country. I have travelled a lot and have lived abroad for over 7 years now, but my bond with my native language is still strong.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

It is often said that German grammar is quite difficult, and this is true to a certain extent. In my classes, I try to encourage my students to take on this challenge with a positive attitude. The grammar of every language is quite fascinating and logical in its own way (at least most of it).
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I studied in Mexico and my Spanish wasn't the best at first. I had to give a presentation, and I wrote it all out to read it out loud (I was desperate). However, I made the mistake of not writing out the numbers (the years). They are different from the German or English. It was a presentation about a historical event. Needless to say, there were many years and I had a lot of trouble. Lesson learned, now I'll never forget how to say the "years" in Spanish.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Living outside of Germany has helped me a lot to get a better understanding of the German language & culture. It has also given me a better understanding of what it means to live overseas.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

I honestly struggled with learning languages myself (at least in high school). I didn't understand how "they work". That's one of the reasons why I now love being a language teacher. I can understand that learning a language can be challenging. I want to try to make sure that people understand the logic of languages and why it is so valuable to learn them.
