About Sean

As an experienced tutor and teacher, I recognize that everyone learns differently. My aim is to help you uncover your unique learning style and support you in working effectively to achieve your academic goals. With a background in studying mathematics and its applications at university, I bring a variety of approaches to tackling problems, which is particularly helpful when tutoring A-level or GCSE students. This allows me to adapt explanations to suit individual preferences and ensure concepts are understood in the best way for you. Drawing on years of preparing for various assessments, I can also share strategies and tips that have proven successful for me, while customizing them to fit your specific learning and working style.

About the lesson

When introducing a topic, I focus on teaching through questioning, encouraging students to think critically and to become resilient when faced with a tricky question. Through this approach, students often find they can tackle any problem of they know the correct questions to ask themselves This approach also provides an opportunity for students to explain concepts themselves, as teaching others is one of the most effective ways to learn. This method has consistently helped students build confidence in their abilities while deepening their understanding of the material.

Every lesson is personalized to suit the individual needs of the student, meaning the style can vary. However, I find the following structure works well for a typical one-hour session:

Introduction and review: Address any challenges or misunderstandings from homework (up to 15 minutes).

Topic exploration: Introduce and explain new concepts, using examples and encouraging the student to take an active role (at least 40 minutes).

Homework setting: Assign tasks to consolidate learning and assess understanding (5 minutes).

I also provide exam preparation sessions focused on tackling practice questions to identify and address gaps in understanding. These sessions are designed to build strong exam techniques and problem-solving skills, ensuring you can effectively demonstrate your knowledge to an examiner.
