About Kagan

My path in math education has taken me through tutoring centers, classrooms, college math labs, and one-on-one student support. I have worked with learners from early elementary math all the way through college calculus, which has taught me how to explain the same idea in many different ways depending on the student in front of me.

Students often describe me as approachable, patient, and easy to talk to. I use humor and relatability to build trust because students are much more willing to try, ask questions, and admit confusion when they feel comfortable. I do not believe math ability is fixed. Most students simply need the right explanation, enough practice, and someone who can help them stop feeling intimidated by the subject.

My goal is to make math feel less like a wall and more like a puzzle. I bring professional experience from Mathnasium, Sylvan, classroom teaching, and college-level math labs, but my biggest strength is helping students feel capable again.

About the lesson

I have tutored math for over 15 years, working with students from kindergarten through college calculus. My experience includes tutoring at Mathnasium, working as a math tutor with Sylvan, teaching math in the classroom, and leading math labs at the college level. Because I have worked with students across so many ages, skill levels, and learning needs, I know how to meet students where they are and build from there.

My teaching style is patient, clear, and practical. I believe math is designed to be “lazy” in the best possible way. The goal is not to do the most work. The goal is to find the simplest path, recognize patterns, and solve problems efficiently. In my lessons, I help students understand why each step works, then show them how to choose the method that takes the least amount of unnecessary effort.

A typical lesson includes a quick check of what the student already understands, a clear explanation of the topic, step-by-step examples, and guided practice until the student can solve problems independently. I help with foundational math, arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, college algebra, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, homework support, and test preparation.
