About Jacob

I’m an experienced math tutor with a background tutoring students in my college math lab. I specialize in breaking down and explaining the basics to set a foundation for students to grow as they progress to higher level math classes. I’ve spent years helping students not only understand the material and see the real world applications. My teaching approach is grounded in research-backed strategies and modeled to different learning styles. I’m especially passionate about helping students who’ve felt overlooked, underestimated, or disconnected from traditional education. My goal is always to build clarity, confidence, and critical thinking—without wasting time on busywork or fluff. I treat students like the capable thinkers they are, and take pride in helping them reach their potential.

About the lesson

I build my lessons around active engagement and discussion of why things work. I favor the 5E learning model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) to scaffold understanding and promote natural inquiry. I demonstrate how to do work then have students explain it back as we work. I use scaffolding and various retrieval strategies to improve retention over time.

With new students I start by clarifying their needs and objectives to set learning goals to guide our lessons. We explore content interactively pulling from assignments, class notes, and outside sources to guide the student toward full understanding of topics.

I’m not here to make you memorize endless pieces of information—I’m here to help you integrate them into your life so they are relevant and naturally become part of your knowledge base. employ instructional design strategies that have research backed results. I specialize in helping students who are burned out, bored, or convinced they “just don’t get it.” I ask questions, model critical thinking, and create a space where students feel supported.

Details

All new students (including the initial free 30 minute session) have the option of a 15 minute onboarding and information gathering meeting to discuss goals, set expectations, and know what to bring for the first session.
