About Matthew

Languages have always been a central part of my life, and French in particular has shaped both my academic and personal journey. I hold a degree in French and a Master’s degree in Translation, and through my studies I developed not only a strong command of the language, but also a real appreciation for how empowering it is to communicate confidently in another language. I want to help students because I know how frustrating learning a language can feel when explanations are unclear or rushed. My goal is to make French feel logical, approachable, and achievable, whatever your starting point. I enjoy breaking complex grammar down into simple steps and seeing students gain confidence as things begin to “click”. I’m especially motivated by helping people overcome self-doubt with languages. Whether you’re a student preparing for exams, an adult returning to learning, or someone who has previously struggled with French, I aim to create a calm, supportive environment where questions are encouraged and progress is visible. Above all, I teach because I genuinely enjoy helping others succeed. Seeing students grow in confidence — not just in French, but in their ability to learn — is what makes tutoring rewarding for me.

About the lesson

My approach to French tutoring is clear, structured, and adapted to each individual student. I focus on building confidence alongside accuracy, helping students understand why French works the way it does rather than relying on rote memorisation. Lessons combine speaking, listening, reading, and writing, with particular attention to grammar explained in a simple, logical way. I tailor my teaching methods to the learner’s goals, whether that is exam success, improving spoken French, or gaining confidence for travel, work, or study. For exam students (GCSE and A-Level), I work closely with the specification, focusing on key grammar points, vocabulary expansion, translation techniques, and exam-style practice. For adult learners, lessons are practical and conversational, with real-life French and cultural context. Lessons typically last 60 minutes, though longer sessions can be arranged if preferred. Sessions are available in Belfast or online, using shared documents and resources to ensure lessons remain interactive and effective. I hold a degree in French and a Master’s degree in Translation, giving me a strong command of both written and spoken French, as well as the ability to explain language structures clearly in English. While I am not a qualified school teacher, I bring academic expertise, patience, and a calm, supportive teaching style. My lessons are suitable for GCSE and A-Level students, university students, and adult learners at beginner, intermediate, or advanced level. I welcome students of all ages who are motivated to improve their French in a supportive, personalised learning environment.
