About Mariam

I know firsthand the impact a good teacher can have on a student’s life. As a student in the past, I wasn't the easiest to deal with, but the resilience of my teachers in providing me with an education was truly inspiring. I believe that patience is one of the hardest and most beautiful qualities a teacher can strive to possess, as it involves empathising with the fact that students are still young and will, no doubt, make mistakes. Aside from patience, another quality that I believe is critical for a teacher to possess is passion. When a teacher is passionate about what they do, it makes all the difference to the learning environment, as students will be inspired by this enthusiasm to develop their own passion for the subject. I, like those teachers who inspired me, also possess such enthusiasm for the subject that I teach. During my time at secondary school, I became greatly fond of writing poetry, as I was captivated by how it let me express thoughts that were much too complex for simple words. As an English Language and Literature tutor, I have learnt that no two students are alike. Every learner has their own strengths, challenges, and ways of engaging, so I tailor my lessons to suit individual needs and learning styles. This approach has strengthened my adaptability, communication, and ability to motivate students. It has been my dream for a while now to become a teacher, and while I work at that eagerly, I want to continue to inspire and enable as many students as I can to achieve their full potential and develop a true passion for learning.

My lessons look different for each student as I rely heavily on their feedback as well as set assessments to determine what they need from tutoring. In general, my lessons involve a lot of call and response, as well as working through questions independently and then improving on them together. This gives students a sense of where they went wrong and how to avoid repeating mistakes. I always begin by having my students complete an exam before our first lesson. This allows me to gauge their abilities and provide a personalised experience from the very start. I find this to be very impactful, as the students immediately feel that their concerns are being addressed. I also only offer 1-2-1 lessons, as I believe that this is what really sets tutoring apart from school, the fact the students are given undivided attention where they can openly address their concerns without fear of ridicule. Aside from this I aim to keep my lessons very active. The students will not be listening for long periods of time. Instead, they will be set tasks and given feedback on the spot. This approach ensures that students are always engaged with lessons, as there is little time for distractions, providing a positive return on investment. I specialise in teaching the AQA specification and in doing so have become increasingly familiar with the mark schemes. A lack of familiarity with these schemes is often what causes students to fall short, as they don’t know exactly what examiners are looking for, aside from a general idea. With a more intricate understanding of what is required of them students are able to avoid making fatal mistakes and wasting time in exams. A deeper knowledge of the criteria allows them to cut out unnecessary information, therefore enabling their responses to be more concise and to the point, placing them among the higher level of responses. This will also allow them more time to deepen their points and take their analysis further, which is what examiners really want. Throughout my lessons, I will always refer back to what the mark schemes require and will aid my students in achieving this. For example, in the poetry anthology section, the examiners are looking for a good selection of quotations, a unique set of poems to compare, relevant links to context and understanding of writers' purposes/techniques. In order to help my students hit all these criteria I will usually create a model response and go through it with them, notifying them as to where and why I have been awarded each of the marks. Upon doing this I will then coach them as they attempt to do the same. Finally I want to add that I have always received positive reactions from students regarding my teaching style. They relate that my customised approach and constant feedback helps them to clearly understand what they need to be doing, and I can sense their relief in having their questions answered, and knowing that they can come to me with their concerns.
