About Carol

I have state certification in ESL in the state of Pennsylvania as well as two certifications recognized in international settings. The first is a 60-hour certification by Oxford Seminars and a 120-hour TESOL course and certification by Open Academy.

I worked as a full-time language teacher in schools from 2006 - 2021. I have also done tutoring for many of those years.

About the lesson

Stay engaged in your English lessons with videos and interactive lessons! Short videos of touching or funny stories are the basis for my lessons. I build the learning activities around the videos to include all aspects of language learning. If you need to focus on one aspect of the language, I will customize the lessons for you.
I have helped students prepare for tests, improve their conversation skills, practice for citizenship, and more. After many years teaching in schools, I made my side hustle my full-time job--tutoring online and in person. I have taught couples, small groups and one-on-one, children and adults. I enjoy the variety! I am especially good with beginners, but I have a lot of tips and tricks for those preparing for tests. I have even helped an ESL teacher prepare for and pass an exam for ESL certification.
In a typical lesson with me, you will do a quick warm-up activity to activate your brain and recall what you have studied already. Then, you will look at the opening scene of a video. I will verify your knowledge of words and expressions to be able to describe what you see and teach you essential vocabulary needed for this exercise. Next, you will tell me anything you can about what you see in the scene. Your response will be different depending on your level. Then we will watch the video (usually 2-8 minutes) stopping it occasionally to discuss what we see. Again, this will be customized to your level. After watching the film, we will read a few paragraphs that tell the story of the video, focusing on your pronunciation and making sure you understand all the words. Finally, we will do some activities focusing one or two specific structure/grammar points you need at your level. This will usually be followed up with questions about the story, including asking your opinion about it. I will assign homework if you think you will have time to do it. I vary the homework assignments to include more than just worksheets or practicing with electronic flashcards. It may include recording yourself speaking in English for one to three minutes about something you learned in class. The greatest benefit from having your own live tutor in English is that I can give you specific feedback on your mistakes and hints to help you improve either live or via video recording. For example, my students have told me that this is super helpful for them--to hear me (even if it's a recording) pointing out how their pronunciation sounded and then pronouncing it again clearly and correctly for them. Since this is done in the context of their recorded answer, it really helps.
