About Marilla
I am a fully-qualified TEFL English teacher. Prior to my move into education, I worked as a publicity coordinator and writer for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), where a high standard of English language knowledge was essential. My English accent is BBC-approved, too, clear and precise, without regional dialect. This is ideal when practising pronunciation and learning English in general.
I have been teaching English since 2003, in local colleges as well as language schools. I have run my own homestay language school since 2012, where students come and stay with me as part of the family, and have lessons with me daily, mainly during the summer months. I really love teaching online all over the world, and it's really exciting to be talking to someone somewhere in the world every day, maybe thousands of miles away on the other side of the world, and yet still in my classroom, almost sitting next to me!

Your English lessons should always be customised to your specific needs and expectations. This is the mark of an experienced and effective teacher. Perhaps you are a high-school student, studying for specific English exams? Or maybe you are a university student who wants help with identifying and correcting English mistakes for your final dissertation? You could be a business consultant who needs help preparing for presentations or support in writing meaningful and coherent emails to their international colleagues or clients. In any of these areas, I am very experienced, and can guarantee success in your goals and ambitions.
I like to focus on fluency and meaningful communication when I first begin lessons with my students. I want my learners to feel comfortable SPEAKING English, and listening to authentic conversations, rather than focusing too much on specific terminology connected with grammar and tenses etc. When you are comfortable speaking with me, we then move onto more structured work, focusing on grammar, vocabulary, listening and speaking expectations.
I believe it is important to regularly review and analyse your learning needs and objectives as well as assessing the quality and effectiveness of any course content. It is important for us to work effectively together as a team, and for you to always be happy and comfortable with the rate at which we are working. Sometimes I include dictation practice in the lessons, and encourage you to work on active listening, to improve your listening and reporting skills. To do this, I like to employ a number of different techniques which could include reading from British newspapers, discussing articles from TedTalks, and using a number of resources to enhance your learning.
I believe I am empathetic, patient, focused and above all, interested in and dedicated to my students. I believe in the importance of constructive feedback and in helping you to set realistic learning goals.
