About Rong

I’m a numbers enthusiast who turned my love of problem-solving into two master’s degrees—one in Statistics and another in Data Analytics—and a career as a data analyst by day. For more than five years I’ve also tutored math, guiding students from early secondary school right up to first-year university. Because I work with real-world data daily, I can show exactly where classroom math shows up in finance dashboards, medical studies or the next app on your phone. I’m patient, friendly and believe every question is worth asking; my job is to translate formulas into everyday language.

About the lesson

My Tutoring Approach in a Nutshell

1. How I teach (techniques & methodology)
• Start with “why.” I open each topic by connecting it to a real-world question— for example, showing how algebra underpins data encryption or how calculus drives COVID-19 spread models. That way, students see the purpose before the procedure.
• Concrete → pictorial → abstract. We move from everyday examples to sketches/graphs and finally to symbols and formulas. This three-step ladder keeps even tricky concepts grounded.
• Think aloud & probe. I solve a sample problem out loud, modelling the reasoning. Then I flip the script with guiding questions (“What could we try next?”) so students build their own problem-solving voice.
• Deliberate practice with feedback loops. Short, targeted exercises follow each new idea. I give instant feedback—first on approach, then on accuracy—so mistakes become learning moments, not discouragement.
• Data-driven progress tracking. Using simple spreadsheets (analyst habits die hard!), I chart scores over time, highlight weak spots, and adjust lesson plans accordingly.

2. Lesson length
• Standard session: 60 minutes.
• Intensive exam prep: 90 minutes with a 5-minute stretch break halfway.
Shorter micro-sessions (30 min) are available for quick concept refreshers or homework triage.

3. Qualifications & experience
• MSc in Statistics and a second MSc in Data Analytics—both first-class honours.
• Professional data analyst (4+ years) working daily with quantitative models.
• 5+ years of maths tutoring from Junior Cert and Leaving Cert through first-year university calculus and statistics. My students have achieved grade improvements of one to two bands on average.

4. Who I teach
• Levels: Junior Cert, Leaving Cert (Ordinary & Higher), and first-year university maths/stats.
• Ages: 12 years up to adult learners returning to study.
• Learning goals: Whether it’s catching up on fundamentals, nailing exam technique, or applying maths in fields like business or computer science, I tailor the pace and depth to each learner.

Bottom line
My goal is to turn “I don’t get it” into “I can teach it back.” Students leave each session not just having solved problems but understanding the story the numbers tell.
