About Pratima

Hi! I'm a big picture nerd who loves to learn and loves to help others learn. I strive to connect all concepts to everyday life so learning can be relevant and enjoyable. Though my formal training (molecular biology and microbiology) involved learning intimately about microbes (mainly bacteria and viruses), I love all living things and have taken on the teaching of classes that have allowed me to gain knowledge of all kingdoms of life and even interactions throughout the living world (ecology and environmental science). I love hiking and exploring nature. The subjects I most enjoy teaching are general biology (both parts) for majors and non-majors, general microbiology and environmental science.

Details

I have many decades of experience in research and teaching, so I bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to this endeavor. I have supervised student research, as well as taught a variety of college courses so I have in-depth knowledge of all topics that I list being experienced in. I've also been tutoring for several years so I feel justified in setting my rate where it's at. Please feel free to ask further questions about this.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

As someone who has been in academia in biology for over three decades, my interests were formed in my very early twenties back in the mid-to-late eighties. As a result I completed a BS in biology (microbiology focus) from the University of Pittsburgh before obtaining a PhD from Carnegie Mellon U. After this, I engaged in two post-doctoral research experiences before selecting teaching as my profession. I taught at over a half a dozen institutions first as an adjunct and later as full-time faculty over a span of 25 years before retiring from a full time faculty position in 2021. During this time, I taught a variety of courses including microbiology and environmental science and mentored student research. After retirement, within a couple years, I sorely missed my teaching days and promptly sought private tutoring as a means to reconnect with my love of learning and sharing that with students.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I am able to teach many subjects in biology including introductory biology (both cell and molecular as well as ecology-focused), biotechnology, microbiology and molecular biology as well as introductory college-level environmental science. My favorite topic to discuss in any course is the interconnectedness of all life and the vital role that microorganisms have played (and continue to) in shaping and maintaining life in all parts of the environment. I love coming up with analogies to make this more accessible to my students. If there's anything I don't enjoy teaching as much it's classical genetics (recombination frequencies, for example).
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

The stand-out role models for me are Susan Godfrey (I had her as my teacher in lab for bacterial genetics), Lisa Lambert (professor at Chatham College in Pittsburgh) who was a professional mentor and Timothy A. Mietzner, who was my first post-doctoral supervisor. Susan was an example of patience and answered many challenging questions I had about the class and life. Lisa served as a role model for a successful woman in academics and provided much valuable advice. Tim demonstrated how a sense of humor and genuine empathy could go a long way in being a great teacher.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

For me, the top qualities of a great tutor are being a good listener, and patience and adaptability. Frequent quizzing to assess uptake of content and their ability to apply their learning to the real world, is also invaluable.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I could relate many anecdotes related to my days as a student or teacher but the one I will choose has to do with my first very deep connection with a student. She was the first person to visit me in my office after the end of a course to express her appreciation for the experience she had had both in lecture and lab. Her gratitude was profound and was the first time I felt the level of influence that committed teaching has on those who receive it. Since then, I have had numerous such experiences related to teaching and mentoring.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The greatest difficulty I faced as a teacher had to do with working with students who lacked motivation to learn and resisted my efforts to engage them as good citizens of the classroom. As a tutor, this is not an issue, as I get to build a one-on-one relationship with someone who has sought me in particular to guide their learning. If a person is willing to put in the effort to learn, the process becomes smoother and more rewarding.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is spending time in nature. I love all activities that increase my awareness of the natural world. I love gardening and try to do it fully organically. All of these tie directly into my teaching when the appropriate occasion arises and sustainability is an idea that I love to bring to the fore in all my interactions with others.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

What makes me a Superprof is my willingness to meet each tutee where they are at. When possible, I like to leave them with a better sense of their place in the universe as well as in their academic endeavors.
