About Issie

Hi, I’m Issie, currently pursuing an MSci in Chemistry at the University of Birmingham. I achieved 9 A*s at GCSE and A*AAA at A Level, thanks to my deep enthusiasm and enjoyment for science and mathematics. Over the past five years, I have had the privilege of tutoring numerous students, guiding them not only to improve their academic performance but also to develop a genuine appreciation for these subjects.

In addition to tutoring, I work as a bartender at a nearby restaurant—a role I thoroughly enjoy for its dynamic and rewarding nature. Beyond my academic and professional pursuits, I am passionate about cycling, horseriding, playing the piano, and cooking. I share my home with my horses and cats, who make my leisure time truly special. I love experimenting with new culinary creations and exploring the fascinating way chemical processes run out of and back into human lives such as the Maillard reaction in cooking!

My tutoring philosophy centres on empowering students who may find certain topics challenging or less engaging. I aim to build their confidence and deepen their understanding, enabling them to approach exams with assurance and a positive mindset. I have experience tutoring both peers at college and external students, tailoring my approach to meet individual learning needs.

About the lesson

Mathematics is the international language that forms the foundation of many subjects, especially the sciences. A strong understanding and proficiency in maths can significantly ease the study of subjects with mathematical components—such as statistical testing in biology, complex multistep calculations in chemistry, and numerous formulae in physics. In our sessions, whether online or in person, we will explore a variety of methods to grasp challenging concepts, from diagrams and videos to tailored revision techniques, always focusing on what works best for you.

Research suggests that 45-minute focused work sessions are optimal for concentration. However, I have set a baseline session length of one hour to ensure there is sufficient time for introduction, consolidation, and recap of previous topics without overwhelming the student. Lesson durations can be adjusted to suit individual needs, with fees adjusted on a pro rata basis.

To enhance learning during online sessions, I use a state-of-the-art digital drawing pad that uploads directly to our call, along with screen sharing, a webcam, and a wide selection of online resources. For in-person sessions, I bring printed materials and any necessary resources to support the lesson. My experience completing A-Levels has allowed me to discover and apply diverse learning and revision techniques, which I incorporate into each lesson. This helps students find the best consolidation strategies for themselves, making learning both effective and engaging.
