  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and private tutoring?

I discovered my passion for mathematics over 20 years ago while pursuing my degree. My interest in tutoring grew when I realised how much I enjoyed helping others grasp complex concepts. Sharing my knowledge and witnessing students gain confidence and skills has always been incredibly rewarding. Whether assisting classmates, volunteering, or tutoring professionally, I have found great fulfilment in guiding students to overcome challenges and succeed. This passion ultimately led me to pursue tutoring to make a meaningful impact.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach and the topics you like to discuss with students.

I specialise in teaching mathematics, and one of my favourite topics to explore with students is integration. It's a challenging concept that many struggle with, but I have developed an innovative and revolutionary way of explaining it. My approach simplifies complex ideas, making integration more intuitive and engaging. After just a few lessons, my students not only understand integration but also grow to love it!
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was very fortunate to have incredible maths teachers who were highly knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Their enthusiasm for mathematics was genuinely inspiring, and they had a remarkable ability to share their love for the subject with their students. Their dedication and teaching methods played a significant role in shaping my passion for maths and tutoring.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs several key qualities to be effective:

    1. Deep Knowledge of the Subject - A tutor must have a strong understanding of the material to explain it clearly and confidently.

    2. Patience and Empathy - Students learn at their own pace, so a good tutor must be patient and understanding.

    3. Clear Communication - The ability to break down complex concepts into simple, digestible explanations is crucial.

    4. Adaptability - Each student has a unique learning style, and a great tutor tailors their approach to meet individual needs.

    5. Passion for Teaching - Enthusiasm for the subject helps engage students and makes learning more enjoyable.

    6. Encouraging and Supportive - Building a student's confidence is as important as teaching the material.

    7. Strong Problem-Solving Skills-It is essential to quickly identify where a student is struggling and find the best way to help them.

Combining these qualities helps create a positive and effective learning environment for students.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I'll never forget the day an advanced maths problem completely stumped my entire class, including me. Our teacher gave us a complex trigonometry question and challenged us to solve it before the next lesson. I spent hours trying different approaches, feeling both frustrated and determined. The next day, a classmate and I stayed behind after school, debating various methods until we finally cracked it! That 'aha' moment was unforgettable-it reinforced the power of persistence, problem-solving, and collaboration. Now, as a tutor, I encourage my students to approach challenges with the same mindset, knowing that every problem has a solution waiting to be discovered.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the ongoing challenges I observe is the lack of qualified mathematics teachers with a degree in mathematics, mainly when teaching foundational concepts in lower school education. Without a strong understanding of the basics, students often struggle as they encounter more advanced topics later. This knowledge gap can make it difficult for them to develop the skills and understanding necessary to succeed in more complex areas, especially mathematics. I am committed to addressing these gaps by reinforcing core concepts and ensuring students have a solid foundation to build on as they progress in their studies.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

One of my greatest passions, after integration, is trigonometry. It's an incredibly intricate and advanced topic that uniquely challenges the mind. It requires a deep understanding of geometric relationships and the ability to apply complex identities and often involves abstract concepts that can be tough to visualise. This complexity makes the subject both fascinating and engaging, and I genuinely enjoy the challenge of helping others navigate these intricate concepts, guiding them through the confusion they might face while solving problems.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ? What makes you unique.

My ability to transform complex concepts into manageable and understandable parts makes me unique as a tutor.

I am dedicated to fostering a supportive learning environment where students feel empowered to ask questions, embrace mistakes, and learn at their own pace. My passion lies in connecting abstract mathematical ideas to real-world applications, making the material not only accessible but also inspiring. With patience, clear explanations, and a deep understanding of the subject, I ensure that students learn and truly grasp the concepts, igniting their potential for success.
