About Calvin

As an Applied Mathematician who can make students love mathematics – even those who have a hard time coping with its complexities at school – I am positive that you will be interested in finding out why I consider myself an excellent candidate for a math tutor. The mathematics curriculum at the area schools is all good, but my concentration goes a step beyond.

As a math tutor, I try to make sure I know the student's strengths and weaknesses. I do that by doing the following exercises, as a group: without using a pencil, multiply and divide even and odd numbers by 5. However, when you multiply an even number by 5, just cut the even number in half and add a 0
C
(a) Lets look at the even number 8 multiplied by 5. (8 x 5) First, cut the 8 in half and you will get 4. Then add a 0. Therefore, 8 x 5 = 40.
(b) Lets look at the even number 176 multiplied by 5. (176 x 5) First, cut the 176 in half and you will get 88. Then add a 0.
Therefore, 176 x 5= 880

However, when you multiply and odd number by 5, just cut the number in half and remove the decimal point

(c) Lets look at the odd number 9 multiplied by 5. (9 x 5) First, cut the 9 in half and you get 4.5. Next, remove the decimal point and you get 45.
Therefore: 9 x 5 = 45.
