About Jean-Jacques

As said above, my original career was as an animation film director, for which I studied 7 years in Belgium, then officiated professionally for 8 years in Taiwan.
Animation is a formidable profession, among the most inspiring and stimulating artistic professions that exist ... as much as it is one of the most exhausting by the monstrous sum of immense tasks to be accomplished to make a film.
After 15 years of this regime, I just got tired of being chained to my computer (everything is now done on my computer) and wanted to find something that could bring me back to real life.
I didn't have to look very much. a long time because I quickly fell into my other passion, which I nurtured for years in parallel with animation: photography.
And there it was perfect, photography forcing me to leave my room to go and capture the world as it is.

So armed with a new second-hand camera that I I set out to conquer the world of photography 5 years ago.

My favorite style of photography, given my background in animation, has always been capturing vivid, real moments. I have always had a problem with the photos posed, I need dynamism, movement (paradoxical since the photo is frozen). Suddenly, street photography has always been my favorite style of photography, as it is about capturing people naturally, going about their daily lives, a bit in report mode. Some of my best photos were taken during the so-called Sunflowers protests in Taiwan in 2014, which awakened my feeling as a reporter.

I was also very interested in the social and ethnic representation of native Taiwanese tribes, who never cease to shine with originality to be represented in a country which treats them, as everywhere else, as second-class citizens (while they are at home) ...

But since street photography or travel photography (my other great love) do not pay these days, I have been involved in event photography (including concerts, shows, weddings) for almost 4 years now, where I worked for 3 years (between 2015 and 2017) as official photographer of a Taiwanese artistic space called Red Room, which organized several artistic performances per month, where I was also part of 3 different photo exhibitions, including one in solo.

Since then, I have embarked on a freelance career where I alternate weddings, concerts, conferences, interviews, shows, parties and festivals, accumulating over the years experience, skill, and photographic equipment (for 3 years I have been a fan of Fujifilm cameras, which I find extremely good designed to start in photography)

After returning to Belgium for 2 years, I am now back in Taiwan where I am also launching this course there, and where I hope to be able to share my experience.

Hello everyone.

As the title doesn't say, I have been an animation filmmaker for 15 years who has been working in photography for almost 5 years, and who mainly does in events (concerts, conferences, weddings), even if my passion remains street and travel photography.

I have traveled a lot in East Asia (in China, Japan, and especially Taiwan, where I spent 12 years of my life there), and I certainly have plenty of pictures and stories to tell about how life there shaped me as a photographer.

My lesson will be as follows:
The 1st lesson will be essentially a discussion on the question: What is a good photo?
I will also introduce some basic technical notions (such as for the composition of images and the importance of light).

Afterwards, the lessons will be divided into 3 parts: A purely technical part , another to improve the artistic vision of the photographer's eye, and a 3rd part to help students tell a story through their photography. Depending on the needs of the students, I will alternate with each other in each class (a technical class on how to master your device, followed by an artistic class to improve the quality of your vision, then our quality of storyteller via our images, via a lot of anecdotes of photos that I had taken myself in Taiwan, when I started my profession, and so on).

These courses are mainly intended for beginner or intermediate photography enthusiasts who want to embark on their hobby more seriously, or even to make a career out of it later.
