About Diane

Hi. I'm Diane. I am originally from Michigan and have a Master's degree in Education specializing in English as a Second Language and a Bachelor's degree in Spanish from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Upon graduating, I moved to Venezuela where I taught ESL to children, adolescents, and adults for more than 30 years. While there, I prepared more than 400 students, many of whom studied abroad effortlessly passing the TOEFL exam and gaining admission to excellent universities. Others furthered their careers in their native countries or abroad due to the level of proficiency obtained in my classes.

Since returning to the U.S. three years ago, I have been an ESOL Reading Instructor at Lone Star College, I have also taught beginner to advanced level ESL courses and Accent Reduction for several language companies, and tutored Spanish and English Language Arts Reading Courses.

I have an extensive background in Accent Reduction, having studied Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German and Linguistics while at the University of Michigan and achieving bilingual fluency in Spanish. Because of this experience, I can easily diagnose the reason for a particular student's difficulties in pronunciation and devise strategies for solving them.

My own personal experience in successfully adapting to a new language and culture has provided me with a unique insight into the complexities of learning another language on the part of the learner. I instinctively know how to help the student in achieving fluency and adapting to a new culture because I also went through the process myself.

There is nothing more rewarding than seeing one's students improve and excel, and having been a part of it. I believe good teachers are born, not made. The ability to connect with and inspire one's students, a sincere belief in their abilities, dynamic classes and enthusiasm are key to becoming an outstanding teacher. This is the teacher I strive to be.

Classes are tailored to each student's preferred learning style, proficiency level, and particular areas of difficulty.

GENERAL ENGLISH CLASSES:

The goal of my ESL classes is to develop conversation skills as well as correct grammar and writing.

The focus of grammar instruction is on its immediate use in meaningful conversation.

The majority of class time is dedicated to conversation about real people and things relevant to the student.

All new structures and vocabulary are associated with visuals whenever possible (real objects, charts, videos)

Correct pronunciation is emphasised beginning at the lowest levels to avoid learned errors which become difficult to change later on.

All difficulties encountered by the students are addressed before moving on to new material.

Homework activities are assigned for the purpose of facilitating the retention of daily material presented in class.

ACCENT REDUCTION CLASSES:

The purpose of Accent Reduction classes is to resolve difficulties in pronunciation as well as the student's comprehension of spoken English. Classes focus on the areas in need of improvement after a careful analysis of the individual student's speech.

Many of the difficulties a student has are because of a lack of information about how the native speaker links words in the stream of speech and how to decipher the confusing spelling of English. As a result the student acquires many learned errors in pronunciation. Once these things are explained, a student's pronunciation can improve dramatically.

When working on a particular difficulty, the student's error is analyzed and the student is instructed in making specific changes to produce the correct sounds. Examples of these sounds being worked on are also recorded for the student so they may be practiced outside of class.
