About Teacher Emma

Hi, I'm Emma, and I'm an 11+ English tutor and the founder of Wordy Classroom. I trained as a primary teacher with a Bachelor of Education, majoring in English Literature, and I have over eight years' teaching experience, including in person in London and Dublin, before moving online.

About the lesson

My lessons are live on Google Meet, one hour long, either one-to-one or in a small group of no more than five children. I plan every lesson myself around the children in front of me, so there is no scripted programme and no worksheets pulled from a drawer.

For 11+ English we work on three things. Creative writing that scores under time pressure, with a clear structure your child can rely on in the exam. Reading comprehension with a method for inference, retrieval and vocabulary questions, so they stop guessing and start finding the evidence. And the spelling, punctuation and grammar that grammar school and independent school English papers test. When your child is ready, I run timed 11+ mock exams with detailed marking and feedback so you know exactly where they stand.

Every lesson follows the same rhythm: I model the skill, we practise it together, then your child tries it alone while I give feedback. They get short homework and regular assessments, and you get straight answers about progress and what we are working on next.

I also teach KS2 English, Year 6 SATs preparation, phonics for Reception to Year 2 and English for home-educating families. Confidence first, then skills, then exam technique, in that order.
