About Ella

Hi, I'm Ella,

I am currently in my first year of university, studying at Victoria University. I major in Politics and Criminology; however, my passion is English.

Throughout both primary and secondary school, English has not only been my passion, but my strength. I have always loved sharing this passion with others and helping them to accomplish their goals.

English, to me, is a unique subject that allows you to think outside the box and get creative. I believe that as long as you can legitimize your ideas, you will get good grades. NCEA, especially, is where I have excelled, as it allows you to think outside the box and include your own thoughts!

I am keen to tutor people of all confidence levels regarding English. I understand that sharing personal ideas and voice can be hard, and can feel uncomfortable - but I promise to provide a judgment-free zone for all.

Ultimately, I want to work to create personalized goals for you, grow your English confidence, and help you produce work to be proud of.

About the lesson

. I'll help set achievable goals for individuals to be proud of. I understand as a tutor that not everyone's goals are top grades, but rather to achieve a level they can be proud of. I ensure to work alongside this to make lessons comfortable and enjoyable.

. Adaptable teaching styles for different needs/ages. I understand every child is different - and especially in English, there is no right or wrong answer. I can ensure that I will work with individuals and adapt my teaching style around what benefits them most. My main goal is not only to help to achieve good results, but also to make sure clients enjoy English as a subject.

. I'm comfortable tutoring from primary to high school (NCEA). I have tutored older students in English as well as worked with primary school kids on homework, so I am comfortable working with any age range. My main expertise is regarding NCEA and essay prep, but my basic English knowledge is more than satisfactory for younger students.

. Adaptable lesson lengths depending on individuals' needs. I am happy to teach for a minimum of 30 minutes as I understand some people benefit from shorter lessons. However, around exam times, especially, I can tutor for up to 3 hours. This is the length of an NCEA exam, which means I can help with time management and practice exam essays/unfamiliar texts.

. Regarding NCEA prep. I am willing to do unpaid time to prep to help my client. This will include note-taking on essay texts, finding practice unfamiliar, and providing feedback on work. I am happy to supply my email for any out-of-class quick questions (especially during exam season).

. I'm able to do in-person and digital meetings. I am based in Wellington CBD. If in busing distance, I am happy to come to a meeting point for in-person lessons. However, I am also able to do online/Zoom.

This first lesson offered with Ella will allow you to get to know each other and clearly specify your needs for your next lessons.

I am happy to travel up to 10km for free. Any distance exceeding this would require an additional cost due to the time and bus/train fare.

I am happy to meet at a public library or book out a study room at the Kelburn campus if given enough notice for no additional cost.

My first consultation will be free as I get to know the student, set goals, and understand their needs.

I am happy to negotiate prices depending on the level of expertise required, and or financial situations.

I am willing to work one-on-one, as well as in group settings of up to 4 students.
They must all be in the same year group, e.g. Tutoring NCEA level 1 group. Prices will vary for this, however. e.g.
2 students is $35 an hour ($17.50 pp), 3 students is $45 per hour ($15 pp), 4 students is $50 per hour ($12.50 pp)
