About Sarah

I am an English Tutor with over 10 years' experience in teaching across secondary schools, private colleges, and at university level. I have taught English GCSE, A-Level and English as a foreign language to private students, all of whom have been successful in raising their attainment level.
I have a First Class Honours degree in English from University College London, and a Master of Studies from Oxford University.
I am currently a PhD candidate in English Literature specializing in British Romantic Poetry.

About the lesson

I have wide-ranging knowledge of the demands of English Literature at GCSE and A Level, and have been successful in either helping my students to achieve their target grades where they are aiming high, or raising attainment by at least a grade where they found they required extra-curricular support.
As a tutor I support the student to develop their close-reading skills to give them the confidence to respond to a new text without the support of the teacher’s framework. I work with a dialectical approach, encouraging the student’s ability to articulate their thoughts, intervening by helping them to refine those thoughts into arguments, and working them to improve their writing to elucidate their ideas. I focus on teaching essay writing skills which will encourage my students to develop their own critical voice, which is the key to the highest levels of attainment in English literature at A Level and beyond.
I am also able to give students an idea of the demands of university level reading and writing which is necessary for the top grades at A-Level as well as being able to show them a way to build on their skills which will enable them to get to that level with self-confidence.
