About Caprice

I am currently an undergraduate student and writer based in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

I completed the full IB Diploma Programme in high school where I earned awards for Academic Excellence in English, Excellence on the Extended Essay (I wrote a comparative essay on the works of two poets), an award for the CAS (Creativity Activity Service) project, and a scholarship for students studying English in post-secondary. I have had significant experience successfully completing and tutoring students in IB English and am always excited to work with students as they navigate their way through the course, so that they both excel academically and understand how the skills they are learning are transferable and useful to them in a multitude of aspects in their lives.

I have been published in Poetry in Voice's 2024 Voices/Voix journal, Mad Persona Magazine, and was one of 15 submissions selected from an international call for submissions from Pigeon Publishing for a special feature in Heidelberg in collaboration with UNESCO Cities of Literature. Currently, I work as a publicist for Mad Persona Magazine where I work to find homes and cultivate spaces for the works of so many talented writers and as an English Program Coordinator with Poetry in Voice where I work with a network of poets and schools across Canada coordinating our programs.

I hope to inspire you to achieve your own goals in English or Creative Writing!

Hello!

I am incredibly passionate about English Literature and Creative Writing and I hope to share this interest with students who might need some additional support in their class, want to expand their current knowledge, or have personal goals they hope to reach in these areas. Whatever your goals are, I am excited to help you reach them!

I have worked with students from grades 5-12 on grammar, reading comprehension, essay writing, and literary analysis for their English courses. As part of my tutoring, I develop and provide my own materials to assist the students in their development that they work on with or without me. I provide my own exercises, examples, resource sheets, and more for no additional charge.

I have also worked with numerous students to develop their creative writing skills and personal writing. In high school, I was one of 16 students selected for Canadian organization Poetry in Voice's all-expenses paid 4-day writing intensive workshop where I had the opportunity to work with celebrated and renowned poets, publishers, and authors. Since my time in the program, I have led dozens of poetry writing workshops and lessons for elementary and high school classes as well as worked one-on-one with writers interested in developing their craft. I have worked with a number of students who started out just interested in poetry, meeting with me for a couple of months and then getting their first publication in a literary magazine or submitting to their first writing competition.

Objective:
When working with students, my objective is always to identify, with them, where their strengths and weaknesses are in the subject. Helping them to identify where they are succeeding and needing to improve is critical to my approach. I see---and help the student identify---where the student needs to develop and what their objectives are for themselves, which we construct a plan to achieve. Frequently checking in with the student and maintaining communication so that we both feel they are making meaningful progress is essential to maintaining this approach throughout our work.

Approach:
My approach will vary slightly depending on the student’s needs and preferences. Some students prefer to work independently on materials I give them between our sessions and I go through it with them during the session, some students prefer to work on material during our sessions, and some students prefer a balance of both depending on the part of the course they’re working on.
Greatly influenced by the Socratic approach in my own education, I employ this considerably in my own teaching. However, in a balance of efficient productivity and an emphasis on the etymological definition of “education” as “the act of leading out,” I incorporate the Socratic approach for more conceptual parts of ideas and in analysis specifically, but in a more pragmatic way that is accomplished by asking more direct questions. For example, when working on literary analysis with students, I implore them to consider certain aspects of the text, tell me what they identify. Rather than them approaching the text thinking they need to assign labels to everything that they see, I encourage them to consider what they are reading and how the functions of the text are working together allowing them to make more meaningful connections while learning functional skills of analysis.
I provide specific materials for each student I work with. These materials will vary based on their need, want, subject, and objective for their learning. Discussion regarding this will be had during the first session and throughout.
I encourage open communication and for students to reach out to me with any questions and always let me know if something is unclear or if they think another strategy would work more effectively for them.

Student Success/Experience:
I have been tutoring consistently for almost 5 years. I have tutored IB, MYP, and academic English; MYP and academic History; gr. 7-9 academic Math; and worked with students in creative and formal forms of writing.
The students I have worked with have always seen a notable increase in their marks, ranging from 5-20% increases in their marks over the duration of our tutoring and the students’ efforts.
Throughout the tutoring experience, I also work with students in applying feedback given on their assignments in order to perpetuate and amplify this improvement.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about tutoring with me or if you are interested in booking a session! I hope to hear from you and help you work towards your goals in English or Creative Writing!
