My first lesson is always a trial lesson to learn about the person's goals for learning English and what they hope to get out of working with a tutor. Using this information, I create a personalized plan with the goal at its center. My lessons are 1 topic (or subtopic) only. This means that I will focus on teaching the material in depth. I then create a homework assignment for the student to complete before the next lesson. In the beginning of the next lesson, I go over the homework with the person and explain why their answers were wrong, if any. I make sure that the student understood the material from the previous lesson if they had any trouble with understanding it fully to complete the homework. I then start teaching the student the current lesson's material. My style of teaching is not just me speaking and the student listening/writing notes. Instead, I work with the student in a more conversational manner to collaborate with the student than just speaking to the student.
