About Laura

When I was in secondary school, I didn’t feel a strong pull towards English as a subject. I didn’t connect with the teaching methods used and the pressure to rote-learn fiction and poetry essays off-by-heart really made me dread studying the subject. However, in my free time I loved to read, and listen to musicals, and watch films; basically anything that had a semblance of plot and character in it had me hooked! I had a real passion for storytelling. It was in nurturing these interests outside of the classroom that spurred me on to study English Literature and Classics at Trinity College Dublin. There, I relearned the subjects in a way that completely changed my outlook on how interesting and engaging a class setting can be. I’m interested in tutoring secondary level students because I want to ensure that students can enjoy studying literature from within the set junior cert and leaving cert curriculums. Moreover, I hope those students can carry that enjoyment of learning into their later life.

About the lesson

Hi there! I’m offering tutoring lessons to second and third level students seeking to get a better grasp of either English literature or Classics at school/college. As a recent graduate of English and Classics at Trinity, I’ve experienced first hand how frustrating and confidence-knocking a poor teacher/professor can be. With that in mind, I have three distinct goals when it comes to teaching; to provide students with the foundation of knowledge needed to excel in literature and history studies, to build up a student’s confidence when it comes to class engagement, discussion, and analysis, and to instil in that student a genuine love for literature and storytelling.
Lessons will last one hour per session and are flexible for the first three sessions. This allows the curriculum to be catered to each student’s specific needs, which will be explored and noted at this initial period of learning. After this, my aim is to create a learning intention plan with my student which will give us a roadmap for the remaining sessions.
