About Shanmugakani
Future planning for high school students is not a simple task. Many times it’s not at the forefront of a students’ mind. And that’s not surprising. Students have a lot on their mind, especially if they’re struggling with anything whether it be academic or personal. As parents, and adults, we learn how to plan and look into the future without getting overwhelmed. But for your student, it could very well be a daunting task. Even if your student is looking forward to what the future holds, give them some guidance and get excited with them! Teachers create a feeling of community in the classroom by modeling and encouraging positive behaviors, by creating opportunities for meaningful peer-to-peer or student-to-teacher interactions, and being aware of students who may need additional support through challenging times in the school day.
Some effective reactive strategies include pre-planning alternate activities for students who finish early and become bored, having a redirection strategy to use with students to switch bad behaviors into good, and responding quickly to an upset child or mediating issues between two or more children so that undesirable behaviors do not escalate.
