About Shona

I became an English teacher because I’ve always loved language and communication. Over the last six years, I’ve taught teens and adults from all over the world, both in schools and online. I’ve supported students preparing for university, working towards Cambridge or IELTS exams, or simply trying to feel less nervous when they speak. Some of my favourite moments are when a student messages me to say, “I got the band score I needed” or “I finally spoke up in a meeting and felt confident.” Those wins never get old. What I enjoy most about teaching is the relationship side. I like getting to know my students as people – what they care about, what they find difficult, and what they are aiming for. From there, I can design lessons that actually make sense for them: relevant topics, realistic tasks, and clear steps to improvement. I’m friendly, honest and patient, and I try to create a space where it’s completely fine to make mistakes, be unsure, and ask “silly” questions. I’m also a bit of a teaching nerd: I enjoy planning lessons, creating materials, and finding new ways to explain tricky grammar or academic skills. I’m always learning and updating my approach so that my students get practical, up-to-date support. Overall, I teach because I genuinely care about my students’ progress and futures, and I feel lucky that my job is to help people reach their goals using English.

About the lesson

I always start by finding out what you need English for (study, work, exams, moving country, confidence in speaking, etc.) and then I design lessons around your goals. In class, I use a communicative approach with lots of speaking, real-life tasks and personalised practice so you can immediately use what you learn. I also like to break skills down into clear, manageable steps and show you exactly how to improve (for example, how to structure an essay or how to extend answers in speaking exams). A typical lesson is 50 minutes. This usually includes a short warm-up, clear focus on one or two main objectives, controlled practice, more open speaking/writing practice, and feedback at the end. I have over six years’ experience teaching English to teens and adults in Asia, Europe, the UK and online. I hold a CELTA, a 180-hour TEFL, and a Postgraduate Diploma in International Education with a TESOL focus from the University of Dundee. I’ve taught general English and exam preparation (Cambridge KET, PET, B2 First, C1 Advanced, and IELTS), as well as academic skills such as essay writing and presentation skills. My lessons are mainly for teens and adults from B1 to C1 level who want to: improve general communication and confidence, prepare for Cambridge or IELTS exams, develop academic English for school or university, or polish their English for study, work or immigration. Above all, I aim to create a friendly, supportive atmosphere where you feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions and taking risks with your English.

£15 is for a 50-minute class. I will spend time preparing a personalised lesson plan for your level and goals beforehand.
