About Michael

I have taught University English courses for 10 years, in classes with as many as 25 students. Many students have told me that they had been professionally successful because of the job application materials and lessons studied in my class.

I am convinced that a university education should encourage critical thought. One of my goals as an instructor is for my students to complete my classes better equipped to apply detailed, well-informed analysis to texts and varying rhetorical situations. I want my students to question why something is done, and not just accept and maintain the status quo. By offering the tools to analyze communication acts critically, my students are able to recognize the power of effective rhetoric.

I strongly believe in a student-centered pedagogy. I focus on getting to know my students and their personal learning styles. As best I am able, I make adjustments to materials or lesson plans should a student need special accommodations. I also believe that a classroom is a space occupied by individuals with unique backgrounds, which in turn influences how they interpret the world and how they communicate. Everyone is imbued with different sources of knowledge and differing strengths that they bring to the classroom. I do not believe that the teacher is the font from which all knowledge flows, and that students are empty vessels waiting to be filled. All students have something to contribute, particularly when we consider the wide range of cultural diversity within the United States.

I strive to facilitate a dialogic learning environment that builds a community of knowledge, while also valuing an open, safe learning space in which everyone’s voice and ideas are considered.
I do not believe that there is a single, proper way to write. Instead, effective communication is context specific, culturally informed, and depends on different rhetorical situations. Writing as a social process does not exist in a vacuum. Because it is a social event, it both influences and is influenced by one’s community, social setting, and personal history.

Finally, I see the rapid advance of technology in our world and recognize that students face a barrage of information through the internet and other multimodal texts. As such, I want my students to learn to avoid being passive consumers of sound bites and twitter posts. I agree with the NCTE that “[t]he techniques of acquiring, organizing, evaluating, and creatively using multimodal information should become an increasingly important component of the English/Language Arts classroom” (NCTE Position Statement on Multimodal Literacies). To me this means that the ability to rhetorically analyze and apply critical literacy skills to multimodal texts are important to a well-informed 21st century citizen.
