As I have been teaching my own children for the last 10 years, I have found that children learn to love reading by being exposed to great literature which also helps them to learn how to write quality essays and stories themselves. Using quality literature, I will teach proper sentence structure as well as things such as nouns, pronouns, verbs, similes, prepositions and prepositional phrases. Spelling is most effectively taught through multi-sensory processes and through repetition. I will teach them the sounds of each letter while they also writing the letters in the sky or on a baking sheet covered in things such as salt or shaving cream. They will practice such things until mastery while also taking small steps forward as they are ready.
