About Aliya

Teaching piano has given me the opportunity to work with students of all ages and abilities, each bringing a unique perspective and set of goals. My teaching philosophy centers on building solid technical skills—finger independence, rhythmic accuracy, sight-reading, and coordination—while fostering expressive musicianship through phrasing, dynamics, and tone color. I incorporate music theory and improvisation to deepen musical understanding and inspire creativity. Lessons are personalized to reflect each student’s interests, whether that means classical repertoire, jazz improvisation, or modern popular music. A rewarding moment in my teaching journey was helping a student overcome performance anxiety, culminating in a successful recital that boosted their confidence immensely. I encourage students to develop structured practice habits and set realistic goals that help sustain motivation and growth. Above all, I strive to create a warm, supportive environment where students can develop into confident, expressive pianists who enjoy a lifelong connection with music.

In my 5 years of teaching piano, I’ve discovered that every lesson is a partnership—a shared space where both teacher and student bring curiosity, intention, and a desire to grow. I work to create an environment where learning is as engaging as it is effective, where progress is celebrated and challenges are approached with creativity.

I start with the fundamentals—keyboard orientation, finger technique, posture, scales, and reading notation—but I also go beyond the basics to help students develop musical intuition. We use a variety of tools like backing tracks, listening exercises, and digital notation software to make learning dynamic and interactive.

My lessons are rooted in a respect for classical repertoire but also embrace contemporary music, allowing students to explore a wide range of genres, from Bach to film scores to pop ballads. I adapt lesson plans to reflect students' interests, often arranging pieces to suit their skill level so they can engage with music they love right away. I also encourage performance—not necessarily in recitals, but through playing for family, recording themselves, or sharing music with friends. One powerful experience I had was working with a student who had trouble with stage fright. Through incremental goals—recording short videos, then playing for small audiences—they gradually built the confidence to perform a full recital, something they once thought impossible.

These moments of transformation are why I teach. I want my students to walk away from lessons not only with improved skills, but also with a deeper connection to music as a form of expression, comfort, and joy. Teaching piano means helping others find their voice—note by note, phrase by phrase—and it’s a journey I feel privileged to take with each student.
