About Nicholas
I am a 40-year-old hairy fella that's worked in the areas of electronic and software engineering for many years. My fascination in electronics began at an early age though my access to information on the subject was limited, hampering my early attempts to understand the components I desoldered from circuit boards. By 9 years old, I was an effective electronics repair "man", and fixed many a television, video recorder and HiFi. I built my first computer (based on the archaic Z80 CPU) at the age of 16, programming it in assembly language. It was during my PhD, obtained in 2011, that I finally extended my software skills into the area of C programming. Obtaining my PhD was however hampered by undertaking teaching of digital electronics and electromechanical systems concurrently with my last three years, thus I only wrote up my PhD when finally threatened with being kicked out of university for taking too long! Following completion of the PhD (on digital holography, in case anyone knows what that is) I stayed on at the university and continued teaching various strands of electronics. I finally moved into a research-only position and ultimately left the university to form an electronics design company which is my current primary vocation. I always enjoyed teaching, but marking 200 exams in 3 days is no fun!

I aim to tell a story, starting from basics and building to more complicated examples. I encourage questions and tangential discussions where they help with an overall understanding of the subject at hand: In many cases leaving the beaten path of a syllabus can aid in a more holistic feel for the subject, and encourage intuitive thinking.
Typically, I would teach in 1 hour sessions, but may extend to longer sessions where appropriate. Having taught university level electronic and optical engineering for many years, I find 1 hour sessions most natural.
My lessons are aimed at anyone studying electronic engineering, particularly digital electronics. I primarily aim to offer a "feel" for the subject with the minimum of complicated mathematics, but will explore the mathematics where it adds value, and will be happy to walk through examples presented to me. I'm best suited to teach those that are interested, rather than those just trying to get a grade.

Perfect! Nicholas is an exceptional tutor, he has extensive knowledge of the subject and is very thoughtful when it comes to the student's style of learning. His planning for the lesson ensured that the time for the lesson was spent productively. He is able to explain everything in a simple and understandable way with a lot of visualisation. I would 100% recommend Nicholas.
- Motivated, attentive student, working to quickly get up to speed after being "dropped in the deep end"! First lesson was a little unstructured as we were both getting a handle on where the student required to start from - but my impressions are that a bit of a grounding in digital logic followed by and overview of basic CPU architecture should clarify the origin and use of assembly language sufficiently to understand the course they are studyingSee the response Nicholas :
