About Max

My name is Max and I am 18 years old and I achieved three A*s at A-Level and I now study economics at Queen Mary University of London.

I have decided to tutor because after going through sixth form I understand the importance of such a job. I didn’t have a tutor and because of this I had to sacrifice so much of my time in order to earn the grades that I did. This is because despite going to one of the best grammar schools in the area, it just wasn’t enough for me or many other students to truly master our students. Having recently finished sixth form I believe I can relate to those students and help them with their subjects as I understand what they need to take their learning to the next level that they’re just not given at schools. One to one teaching is a completely different environment to the classroom where teachers have to teach groups as a whole and it’s just not feasible to sufficiently tend to each and every students needs. I believe a tutor can do this and that is why I am a tutor because I believe I can make that difference and help students reach their full potential.

About the lesson

Virtual lessons last for 1-2 hours depending on scheduling and your own preference.

I tutor maths for all ages up to A level as well as A level further maths and economics. I achieved A*s in all three of these subjects and now study economics at Queen Mary University of London.

For maths and further maths I will help with individual topics that the student struggles with as I know how it can be difficult to understand tricky topics in the classroom with the teacher having to balance many other students. Following this I will break down exam questions with the student as these style of questions can come as a shock to the student as they tend to be a significant step up from what is taught in the classroom. From my time I have learned many students are not given enough help in adjusting to this.

Similarly for economics my tutoring is split into two parts, helping with the syllabus and helping with the exam paper itself. I can teach any syllabus due to all uk exam boards having similar content. This also includes the short answered questions of the exam paper. For the essay questions in the paper I prefer to tutor edexcel students and this will consist of learning how to structure each answer properly and developing a high level answer.

It is also important to cover parts of the course that the student has understood in order to keep it fresh in their memory. At A-level, as any teacher will tell you, time is precious and therefore topics that the teachers teach are often not revisited after being taught, with exceptions being before exams. As I and other students have found this can lead to valuable revision time being taken up by having to relearn the course, rather than perfecting what the student already knows. This also can mean the student ends up losing precious marks in the exam on a simple question that they know how to do but it has just slipped their memory, something many students will relate to. So if there is any ‘spare time’ left in a lesson I will ensure that the student does not share that experience.
