About Evelyn
I am a Computer Programming tutor with 5 years of experience and a BEng in Computer Engineering. I have worked with over 185 students from school beginners through to professionals transitioning into data and software engineering roles. My lessons cover Python, Java, JavaScript, SQL, algorithms, and data science fundamentals across examination and career preparation contexts. My engineering background gives my teaching a practical, problem-solving orientation that pure computer science training sometimes lacks. I particularly enjoy helping students from non-technical backgrounds discover that they can build real, functional systems with code when given the right foundational instruction. My programming teaching addresses the specific challenge many students face of understanding code as isolated syntax rather than as a coherent logical system. I begin by teaching computational thinking — how to decompose a problem, identify the data and operations involved, and design a solution before writing a single line of code — because students with strong algorithmic thinking learn syntax far faster than those who try to memorise code patterns without understanding the underlying logic. My Python curriculum is structured around genuine data science applications for students with analytical backgrounds, covering pandas, NumPy, and matplotlib alongside core programming concepts because immediate applied relevance dramatically accelerates learning motivation. For students targeting software development I teach test-driven development from early in the curriculum, introducing the habit of writing tests before implementation because this discipline produces more reliable code and better software engineering thinking. SQL is taught as a data querying and analysis tool integrated with Python data workflows rather than as a separate isolated subject, because the modern data professional needs these skills in combination. I use pair programming exercises where I act as the second programmer, talking through my own thinking aloud and asking the student to do the same, because the ability to articulate coding reasoning is a professional skill as important as the code itself. Project-based assessment is used throughout — students build an expanding personal portfolio across our sessions that demonstrates their growth in concrete, shareable form. My teaching goal is a programmer who approaches every new problem with confident, systematic method.
