About Simon

For over 8 years, I’ve taught guitar to a wide range of students—some starting from scratch, others looking to refine advanced skills—and I’ve developed a teaching philosophy that is both structured and deeply personal. I begin every student journey by understanding their goals, inspirations, and learning style. From there, we build a curriculum that incorporates foundational skills like chord building, rhythm playing, fretboard navigation, and picking technique, all taught through music that speaks to the student. Whether it’s rock, pop, jazz, folk, or metal, I believe connecting with the music is the key to sustained motivation. I integrate music theory gradually and only when it adds clarity or deepens understanding. I might explain intervals while working on harmonizing a melody, or introduce modal concepts through a favorite guitar solo. My teaching also includes practical skills like setting up a practice routine, using a metronome effectively, and preparing for live performance or recording. I’ve helped students write and record original music, audition for bands, and overcome stage fright through guided performance workshops. A standout memory was watching a teenage student who once doubted their abilities go on to record a self-produced EP. I place strong emphasis on creativity, musical independence, and emotional expression. Guitar should feel like an outlet, not an obligation. I foster a classroom environment where students feel supported, heard, and encouraged to explore. Mistakes are treated as learning opportunities, and every student is met with patience and respect. Whether your journey with guitar is just beginning or evolving, I’m committed to helping you grow with confidence and joy.

About the lesson

My guitar teaching method is all about converting your passion into practical skill with a clear, supportive, and musical approach. We begin with the basics: posture, hand positions, strumming patterns, and chord shapes. But these fundamentals aren’t taught as isolated drills—they’re always tied directly to songs and styles that excite you, from classic rock to fingerstyle ballads or funky grooves.

I emphasize understanding music deeply—how chords connect, how rhythm drives the feel, and how these aspects come together in your favorite songs. Communication is key: I explain concepts simply, avoid confusing jargon, and regularly check in with you to ensure clarity. I adapt lessons to your preferred learning style, using visuals like fretboard diagrams, audio tools like backing tracks, or technology like loopers to keep practice engaging and effective.

Learning guitar should feel like unlocking a new way to express yourself, not like solving a puzzle. To motivate and inspire, I share stories about famous guitarists’ practice routines as well as relatable experiences from learners who overcame challenges. Beyond just playing, I teach essential musician skills like tone shaping, stage prep, practice planning, reading music or chord charts, and creative jamming. Whether you’re aiming for casual playing or professional performance, I’m dedicated to helping you grow with confidence, creativity, and joy.
